Hi, my 23 year old son will be going with a friend and his family for a week starting Memorial Day weekend. Does he need a Mexican tourist card? What about insurance for medical, legal etc. I don't think he will be driving, the parents of his friend might be renting a car, but my son won't have a car, otherwise I'd get him AAA insurance. What suggestions would you have? I have never been south of Rosarito Beach so this is a whole new arena for me. Thanks,
Liz

We bought this more as a what if we needed to be airlifted home or even died after reading the many stories of folks spending 20-50K in medical evacuation expenses.

As it turned out, Joyce came down with a terrible case of broncotious and needed to go to the hospital. The bill was $12500 pesos( About $1200) and I submitted it to the company once we returned. They should be reimbursing us for this amount minus the $250 deductible.

The other part of your ?, he will recieve a tourist card and customs form on the plane. Don't lose it! Costs time and $ to replace, big hassle.

Medex

www.medexassist.com..... for the kind of additional insurance you might need but hopefully won't ever have to use. Buy it on a per trip basis.

Medex is your medical advocate staffed by US specialists to coordinate medical care when you are out of the country. Pays for emergency heli-transport, for example, that your regular insurance will not cover. Gives you a US emergency doc who will talk with the foreign docs and help make appropriate decisions regarding your emergency needs.

Worth every penny.

Thanks, I purchased one of the ones on the web site you provided with lots of choices. Hopefully, it won't be needed, but I'll be happier knowing he has it. I am going to forward the info on tourist card and customs to him and I think I will buy him an inexpensive holder for passport, tickets, money etc.

Liz, Please don't take offense, but is your 23 year old son already sick or accident prone? Alot of credit cards carry insurance for medical theft etc. it is part of the benefit package. His own medical insurance (if he has it) might cover him also. The problem with most travel insurance is that you have to still pay upfront if something happens and then wait to file a claim to recover the money.
It get into Mexico he will need his birth cert. with a raised seal. Not a decorative cert. like you got at the hospital to frame. Starting soon everyone will need a passport to travel to Mexico. the whole 15.00 tourist card information on RCI exchanges is wrong. You get the tourist card on the plane. In mexico when you deplane and go through customs they take half and leave you part to keep during your trip and give to the airport at check-in to leave for the US.
Everyone has a first time to travel to Mexico. I have flown into Mexico 7 times in the last 13 months. But everytime I fill out a tourist card is just like the first time:eek: The thing most people forget to do is sign the card in 2 places on the back. Your son will have lots of people around him to help him figure it out. Don't count on the flight attendents to help, because they don't have to fill them out. Another mistake most people make right away is the mexican form has day/month/year which we are not used to seeing.

Read the fine print

Your regular health insurance will not air-lift you. It will also not put you nor your doc on the ground where you are being treated in phone contact with one of the US based Medex physicians on call 24-7. That communication to manage your care is, imho, one of the critical services of a company like Medex. You have an advocate who will make the arrangements to get you to the facility that can best treat your problem. Sometimes that means treating you where you are. Other times it means transporting you somewhere else or back to the states.

There are other companies, and I can't recall the name of the largest one, but it's worth looking into if not familiar.

btw, I don't work for Medex or any company like it. I do have a relative who is one of their on-call physicians.

No, he is healthy, I just want to cover the bases. I am forwarding all the messages about the tourist card etc. to him. He is flying down alone and then back with his friend and parents.
