I've never heard of a plan like this! Do you mean you can just call anybody to come in and sub? Like if you can't do it, but your friend with a GED and a police record as long as your arm is free for the day, then your friend can come in and sub???

I know in our district , they arrange for the substitute. One of our board members' wives(ex-full timer) is pretty much the 1st call on the elementary lists. I know her, and sometimes she has her pick of sub jobs for a day.

Now if you wake up sick, I think the pickings are pretty slim. I came across one of those while helping in the computer lab. Couldn't wait for the day to end, rather disinterested and the kids knew they could get away with murder. Compare this to the previously mentioned teacher, the class had her respect and behaved like she was their full time teacher.

Our district has a list for the teachers, as I have been to board meetings and they will approve names for the list. Seems like a lot of kids right out of school(who want to stay in the area, it helps get your foot in the door in our district). Come across a couple of retired teachers or SAHM who don't want to go back full time.

I have read all the posts and I am still trying to understand why the Principal(boss) of a school is allowing the craziness I am reading about go on in a school.

If a sub comes into a school for a day, why is the principal not visiting each class? Why is he/she not aware of what is actually going on inside the school? Why is this being allowed to happen?

Both of my kids are in private schools, if a teacher is out, any parent can be a sub. There is no requirement of education involved, however, you are going to be required by our principals to bring something to the table. If you can't teach math then you must have an agenda. The kids will not be acting out because a sub is in the class. Why is this different in public schools?

In California public schools subs have to have a BA and be fingerprinted and be approved by the board to be on the list. Then from there teachers can request particular people if they are available, or they can just put in a sub needed request to the district.
I don't know about other schools, but our school has over 35 classrooms. It sounds like a great idea to have the principal drop in on subs, but the principal has a lot on their plate each day also, so I'm not sure it would always be practical.
It didn't sound like this sub was not doing a good job, just not doing as good a job as the teacher would do, which is to be expected.
No one has mentioned the large number of student absences that teachers deal with also. Parents take their kids out for vacations and day trips, as well as the unavoidable illness and doctor/dentist appointments. That means that the teacher is trying to fill in the blanks for those students as well as move them and the rest of the class forward. This is especially a problem in math.
