snorkel near Fort Lauderdale

Hi,

We will stay in Fort Lauderdale for a week and Naples for 3 days in December. Wondering:

1. Is the water warm and clam enough to get in to the ocean in Dec?

If yes:

2. Is there any good spots near those places for snorkeling. Perfer a place that is near the shore and don't need to take a charter snorkeling tour.

Those charter snorkeling boats can be found up at Lighthouse Cove, about 7 miles north on A1A from Sunrise Blvd. Adult price $45 person/$35 child 12 and under, 4 hours --- did it on a Tues in June 08, went about 1/2+ off the Pompano Beach, rolling waves, nice time. Others who did it next day on Wed had rough water with everyone on the boat sick.

I think there are other boats that leave from Bahia Mia south of Los Olas Blvd in Ft Lauderdale.

What is cool to me as water temperature might be warm for you. I am sure there is some weather site which shows ocean temperatures at different times of the year.

Lauderale By The Sea just North of Fort Lauderdale. Beach snorkeling/diving, reef sits just off shore with first reef in 10 to 15 feet of water. There is two other reef lines that are further out and are in deeper water. They also have a snorkel trail set up here with some old cannons etc. There are showers and metered parking, be sure to feed the meters as they monitor them constantly and give tickets if expired. Dec. the water will be cold to me but usually around 75 to 80 degrees. depending on weather conditions at the time. A light wet suit or dive skin would be good. There is also shore snorkeling/diving at Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach.

In Florida its the law, you must have a legal dive flag no matter where you go. Charter boats funrish them, if off the beach you will have to provide your own. Dive Shops locally rent them.

I would reccomend a snorkle excursion vs swimming far off the beach as this is safer and gets you to better spots.
 
I second Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The first reef is not far off the beach (about half way to the end of the pier). Divers are required to have flags, but I saw lots of snorkelers without them. If you have any questions, ask at Deep Blue Divers, at the corner of Ocean (A1A) and Commercial Avenues near the pier.

There are some pictures of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea beach and a few underwater shots taken there in my photoshow of the Driftwood Beach Club. You can watch it here (free):

wow...what a great slideshow.

I grew up in this area and even lived in Sea Ranch when I first got married...I know all those local spots in the photos, but never realized there was a timeshare there. I hope they upgraded the RED carpet. Great location for a week in Fort Lauderdale.

Thanks for sharing your slide show Judy. David and I are going to be down in Ft. Lauderdale/Pompono Beach in Dec/Jan but don't think we'll be braving the water in winter to snorkel.
 
Thank you for all the recommandations. I'll check out those places.

I went to Miami beach in early Dec many years ago and remember the water is not very warm but warm enough to get into it. Hope my memory didn't go wrong. But for sure, I'll bring a light wet suit.

Oh, other question, is any place to get some raw fresh seafood?
