Smuggs Summer Programming

I thought this might be of interest.

I noticed that the summer programming at Smuggs starts this year on June 7 (I think it was supposed to start the 12th). It looks like it will run through Sept. 7.

Also, they are keeping the Fun Zone open this summer.
 
Wow, this is great for us. We have a June 7th check in. I was told early this year that the summer program starts on the 12th. We were thinking to spend a couple of days first in Boston and then go to Smuggs. Now it's Smuggs the whole time. Not sure if we will be subject to 1 in 4 rule, as normally week 23 (June 7) is exempt from that.

That is what we are doing. We fly into Boston on June 9th. Stay there a couple of days to see the sights and then go on up to Smuggs on June 12th. I am glad to hear they are starting the summer program up earlier. Hopefully everything will be in full swing by June 12th. I heard that sometimes things open in stages.
 
I hope you both have a great time. We are going to be there for the weekend of the 13th. Kids aren't quite out of school yet. We were there last year for the same weekend and the weather was glorious, sunny during the day and great thunderstorms at night. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

If you haven't done this before, I recommend looking into a Segway tour, it is pretty neat. Pricey, but neat!

My boys are drooling over that Segway. I have been telling my boys to save up.
 
I hope you all have a great time! We will be there for two weeks in August, as usual. I look forward to my "Smuggs time" every year and so do my kids.

We did the Segway tour a couple of years ago. I was really so bad at it, I actually made too sharp a turn at one point and the whole thing fell over. Not sure if I'm ready to try that again...!! The guy who leads them is a great guy though!
 
Do you have any advice for multi-week stays at Smuggs. I will be there for 3 weeks (late july-beg aug) with my kids. I was thinking of going off site and trying some horseback riding. Is it worth taking elementary age kids to Burlington? Also, have your kids ever done consecutive weeks of camps?

The nice thing about having consecutive weeks is that you don't have to do everything the first week because you have a second (and third) chance. It's a much more relaxing holiday, I find. The same is true for the kids: our son take days off when he's camped-out and we don't feel we aren't getting our money's worth(!) They're very good about keeping children with the same counsellors if you want this, and also there are usually quite a few kids who are there for more than one week, so they have more time to make friends.

The Eco museum in Burlington is small but it's worth taking younger kids to. We also do a run to the mall at Essex Junction for a movie and a meal at Foodee's Pizza or the Thai restaurant and to buy back-to-school clothes and shoes. Other than that, we don't venture out much. Oh--you might want to spend a day in Montreal, particularly Old Montreal.

Smuggs groceries

We arrived from the north, which you probably won't, but sometimes we bring enough for the first supper and breakfast, and then go to the Hannafords in Essex Junction while the kids are in camp. Otherwise there's a grocery store (part of a chain but I can't remember which) in Morrisville. Another possibility: the Village Store in Cambridge has good meat and salads and Hanleys, the general store in Jeffersonville, isn't too expensive and has quite a good range of staples as well as local cheeses. Last time, we stopped at Boyden's winery and bought meat, chicken and eggs for the week: not organic but home raised. The Farmers' Market, which comes to Smuggs twice a week, has very nice vegetables and sometimes there's local organic meat, too.
 
When you turn off of I-89 to VTrt 100 (exit 10), there is a Shaws Supermarket not too far up on the right. If I remember correctly they are full service incl. wine and beer. There is a smaller market in Jeffersonville called Hanleys General Store, it is right at the bend of 108 and Main Street (before you get to 158 Main, if you go). They have pretty much everything, and if you eat bacon, I highly recommend the locally smoked bacon they sell, it is plain packaged and very aromatic (yum!). There is a VT Liquor outlet store next door, I did not find their wine and beer prices to be all that different than Smuggs. Smuggs also has a Country store that has everything you need, just not at great prices. They do sell local bread and local meat. I find the prices (even at shaws) are higher than in the Boston area.

Smuggs only provides small dial soap, a small box of Cascade, a small bottle of palmolive (we have never needed more that the Cascade or the Palmolive so don't buy extra) and one scrub sponge. They recommend powder laundry detergent, especially if you are staying in a new unit that has the Asko w/d.

hdmass...we have been going for the same two weeks for a few years now, so my kids have friends during each week. My youngest does the dance camp the first week and the adventure/games camp the second...my middle one does the theatre camp both weeks because she has friends from each week that do that camp. My oldest often isn't there for week 33 because of football, but will be there for the first time in a while this year since our school starts later than typical. He is 17 and doesn't go to camp anymore; he just hangs out at the teen center or roams around with his "posse".

I've tried to get them to go to Montreal or even Burlington, but no one wants to leave the resort (which means leaving their friends) for an entire day. I do go out shopping myself though (or with friends)...usually just to Stowe or to the winery, etc, and we do go into Stowe to hit Pie in the Sky between weeks. Have a great time!

P.S. We do go to Pricechopper for groceries since we are there for a couple of weeks.
 
I had to look the price chopper up. On their website, it says that they are located in Morrisville (Rt 15 and Munson Ave). That is not on the way from Boston unless you take the winter route (i.e. not go through the Notch). Going the winter route is about 45 min from Stowe vs. 20 through the Notch.

Just looked at the map again. The Price Chopper is just past the interchange for 100. ( Where you would turn left on 15 to go to Smuggs, you would turn right) It is probably a 20-30 minute drive from Smuggs (of course, everyone in VT passes me on the road).

Also, I don't know what time you are planning to head up to VT but if you can get out of Boston before rush hour, do so. One weekend last year we sat at the interchange of 95N and 93N for an hour! It is very poorly designed! Once we got through that, everything was fine.

I was supposed to be there for some of this week, but my daughters workout schedule got in the way. Boo hoo! At least it is finally spring here.
 
Ok, well that looks to far out of the way so I guess we will stop at Shaws Supermarket and avoiding rushing hour sounds like a good idea to me.;)

Yeah...it's not on our way either. But we are always so anxious to get to the resort that we don't stop for groceries first. We get there, get a few necessities at the Country Store (at Smuggs), and then do a Price Chopper run with friends the next day. If we want cold cuts sooner than that, we run over to Hanley's.

We bring stuff with us too, like laundry soap, pancake mix, salt and pepper, etc.

Of course, we are there for two weeks, so it makes more sense for us to buy more and less expensively. Price Chopper is a lot less expensive than Shaw's...and I actually find Shaw's more difficult to get to than Price Chopper once I'm already at the resort because you have to drive back through the Notch.
 
P.S. When we go to Price Chopper from Smuggs, we make a right turn out of the resort, and then another right turn a bit past the Smugglers' Notch Inn. We do not go through the Notch, as that makes the trip slower!
 
Night time drive from Burlington airport to Smuggs

The only direct flight from home to Burlington arrives at 10:40 pm. This is our first trip. Will night time drive be any problem ? Smuggs's direction does not go through the notch.

You should try Costco outside Burlington to buy in Bulk since you are there for two weeks with the whole gang!
 
Airport to Smuggs

I have only driven from Smuggs to the airport and back during daylight. You will be driving on Rt 15 for most of it which is a two lane road. I can't imagine there will be a lot of traffic at that hour. The drive took me 45 min - 1 hour. I used the directions from the resort and they were fine. Since you are coming in from the Northwest, there is no need to come through the Notch.

No--it's a very straightforward drive. (The reason that the directions don't mention the Notch is that it's beyond Smuggs from where you're arriving. Smuggs is on Mount Mansfield, and the Notch is the road that goes over/through Mount Mansfield to Stowe, which has ski slopes on the other side of the mountain.)

But are you hiring a car to drive from the airport and back again? if it's your first visit to Smuggs, you may not need or want to leave the resort and it might be easier and cheaper to use the Smuggs shuttle.

Thanks a lot. The reason I wasn't sure about the direction is Google says to go 89 to 100 to 108, and Smuggs site says to go 15 through Jeffersonville. I assume Smuggs is correct.

We will rent a car. Is there shuttle between airport and Smuggs ?
 
From the Smuggs website:

Ground transportation to Smugglers' is available via convenient van shuttle service from the Burlington International Airport and Essex Junction Amtrak Station.

Shuttle service must be confirmed at least 48 hours in advance of your scheduled arrival time.
$45 per adult each way, one child (17 & under) per paying adult is free. Each additional child is $35 each way. Two-person minimum fare. Contact Smugglers’ Notch Reservations office at: 1-800-419-4615 or 802-644-8851 ext. 1389.
