I bought a Novaform gel foam bed topper at Costco today to use on a very firm mattress in our guest bedroom. It has a pretty strong odor. The instructions say that it's harmless and normal for "fresh foam" and will gradually dissipate within a few days.

The same instructions say it can take up to 72 hours for the topper to fully expand and recover its shape - although after a few hours it's pretty much already filled out. So I was surprised that it gave a vague "few days" for the odor issue - and it's the first comment on the instructions so they must hear from people about it!

I don't think I could stand to sleep on it, at least not tonight, but I know I'm pretty sensitive to smells.

My question - has anyone bought one of these, and how quickly and completely does the odor go away? It's Monday and I've got a houseguest who'll be using the room on Thursday.

Hiya...
I bought one from Costco a few years back, it's great and yes the smell does go away... maybe closer to a week ??? but i tend to be sensitive to smells too...
guess ya gotta play it by ear?? but the nose knows.. heheehe

I bought two and they will smell for about a week.

Also after a few years you will have an indentation where you sleep....

But it is very comfortable

TUG is amazing!

Six minutes and you got an answer, and two hours for another - on a forum that has nothing to do with mattresses, smells, or Costco!

I love TUG.

I love TUG, too! Thanks so much for the responses....I guess I will plan to keep it, knowing the smell goes away some time, but have to play it by ear on whether I can use it for my guess. I figured with all the Costco members on here, odds were good someone had bought one of the toppers!

I think they all smell at first - I leave ours on top of the bed in the extra bedroom for a week or so before I put them on the bed.

I'm super sensitive and could smell the odor for a little more than a month but it does eventually fade away completely.

Ours is several years old, and I didn't really notice the smell (or it's been so long I've forgotten). However, it took about 4 days for the topper to puff up the way I wanted. Just love it and wouldn't be without it (unless I had the $$$ to buy a Tempurpedic (sp?) mattress).

I thought I'd report back here on my own experience, in case someone else should have the same question in the future. It's now Thursday a.m., and I opened up the topper on Monday afternoon. I've left it on the bed uncovered (and flipped it periodicailly) and have had the windows in the room open.

I think it's fine now for my guest. You don't smell it at all when you walk into the room. Right at the surface, the topper has a slight smell, but more like a general "foam" smell and not the strong chemical odor that was there upon opening. After putting on the topper cover, my mattress pad and sheets, I don't smell anything at all!

With a new coverlet from Overstock and the foam topper, my guest bedroom now looks great and should even be comfortable. (Why does it always take having company to get stuff done?)
