Slowdown...

I got some third hand information that someone visiting the Maui Westin said it looked deserted and that restuarant/s may be closing in that area (Ka'anapali). Any truth to this?

There definitely is a noticeable slowdown due, most probably, to the high airfares combined with the stalling economy.

I'm sure restaurants are closing in Kaanapali. The failure rate for restaurants anywhere is very high to begin with, let alone a place where the overhead is so high. Combine that with a downturn in tourism and the difficulty in finding lower paid employees on a place like Maui and you've got a recipe for failure.

A Starwood owner reported today that the WKORV has Bldg. 4 (Hwy. Bldg.) closed down because they are so slow and they may be doing some updating while it's closed. Early fall is probably the slowest season in Hawaii and with the economy and price of airfare I guess it's to be expected.

I wonder if the use-it-or-lose-it timeshare owners are helping things from getting worse than they already are? If one of the Starwood buildings is not being used, maybe not as much as I thought.
