Yes - except when used at Starwood properties. Then it's two. And that's why I still hold the Marriott Visa for when I stay at a Marriott. But regular purchases where both Marriott Visa and Starwood AMEX give 1 point per dollar, I find I get MUCH more bang for the buck at Starwood.
Not sure how this plays in the Marriott vs SW comparison, but with Marriott card, get 2 pts per $1 spent at fine dining and airlines and car rentals (excludes bulkers like priceline, etc., I think).

Also, when charging at Marriott properties, I believe I get like 12 pts per $1 spent...

Book your travel online at the Marriott site...10 points for every $ spent + 5 points for every $ spent using Marriott Visa. Air fare is anly a dollar or two more than the airline sites.

Maybe I didn't state it clearly, but what I meant is that even though a point stay is available, it doesn't mean that the certificate can be used. I tried to book Cedar City Residence Inn. It was available for a points stay, but when I called to see if I could use the certificate instead I was told no. So I cancelled the reservation.
Yes, I have seen availabilty for the certificate in downtown SLC, and Park City, but only on the shoulder season.
For the Provo conference, by the time I have the certificate (6 months ahead), all the points rooms, including "stay anytime" are all gone. In fact, all the hotels in Provo are booked. The closest hotel availabilty is in Sandy, 45 minutes away ...and there would be no point in doing that.
