over the next year i will be traveling quite a lot. i have read the reviews of the acer mini and it seems to be a decent mini notebook. i do have a mac laptop which i love but don't really want to be lugging it back and forth. i tried the asus(?) at best buy and didn't like it. all i would need the acer for is emails and surfing the web. so do i purchase the ACER 8.9 NOW or wait?
thanks

I've been traveling w/my little Acer for almost 2 months...I'm lovin' it....:)
...what would you 'wait' for?

I love my little Acer too! Best toy I've bought in years! :)

Yesterday Home Shopping network had am Acer as their special of the day. Don't know the specifics since I wasn't interested but it sold for $499.90 in 4 monthly payments. I know it came with a mini webcam. Sorry if you missed it.

Amazon has both the 120GB $349 and the 160GB $399 with free shipping. We purchased the higher end model because of the longer life 6 cell battery. We love the unit. It is now easier to travel without having to lug the larger laptop.

I am holding off any PC buys until USB 3 comes out. It is a game changer. USB 3 will allow the transfer of data, photos, videos, etc. at lightening fast speeds. Sometime in 2009 all the new PC's will have USB 3.

I have the ASUS, and it works fine, but to do it again, I'd buy the Acer 160gb- 6 cell battery now. There will always be something on the next model to wait for, but for travel soon, get the mini. You'll be happy you did.

Did you try the Acer Aspire One? They have them at Costco.

I ended up going with the Lenovo S10, which is probably priced a little higher than the comparable Acer One in the same configuration. I got mine from circuit city online, in a 160G/1G configuration.

The advantage of the Acer Aspire One is that it's available with a 6-cell battery that has 2x the battery life of most of the others that come with 3-cell batteries. If the extended battery life is an important factor for you, then it's a good choice.

As a Mac person, did you consider the Macbook Air? It's more than 4x the cost of a $400 netbook, but it's a lot nicer than them also. Personally, I think it's expensive for what it is, but it is really, really nice. It's a full-size device, with a full size keyboard and touchpad that's super thin and light and very easy to carry. It really does fit nicely in an interoffice envelope. I think the base price is around $1800. My friends at work have them and they are really nice. I'd like to have one, but I'm too cheap to spend $1800 on it.

We did a lot of searching before we bought the Dell Mini. We also considered the HP version, but wanted the larger battery cell. While searching, there were comments from workers at Circuit City and Best Buy that the Acer Aspire One was the most returned computer ever.

I give lots of workshops on the (free) search and rescue software that I wrote. Lugging a 15 inch laptop around for this purpose is a pain, so I bought the ACER 160 G, 6 cell to bypass this.

Last week I gave my usual 8-hour workshop using the ACER for the first time. It worked like a charm, except that some programs do not allow for the fact that the vertical size of the screen is smaller than normal.

hmmm, I see them for around $1350 now on amazon (seller: J&R). I guess the price is starting to drop on these, but not from the Apple store.

I bought a the MSI U100 (10") last night from Amazon for $336 XP, 1 GB Ram, 120 HD, 3 cells. The 6 cells with 160 GB cost almost $100 more. I can get an extra battery on ebay for less.

Before buying the Acer, consider MSI U100 or Asus 1000H or 1000HA. Both have 10" screen and the keyboard is closer to a regular keyboard.

This morning CompUSA has the HP for $399 after $100 rebate:
HP 2133 Mini-Note PC - VIA C7-M ULV Processor 1.6GHz, Bluetooth, 802.11a/b/g Wireless, 2GB DDR2, 120GB HDD, 8.9" WXGA, Webcam, Windows Vista Business.

Price will key dropping with new models out. Wait until you actually want/need one.

What I read says USB 3 won't be out until late 2009 or early 2010.

That's plenty of time to buy a mini now and another one in a year!

I'm really pleased with my Asus 904HA. $350 from JR - 1 GB mem, 160 GB HD, 8.9" screen, card reader, XP, 6 cell battery, Atom processor, web cam, etc

All around, hard to beat package.
