We will be going to Sedona for the 1st time next month. I have read that Oak Creek Canyon is very pretty. I don't see this listed on the tours that I have checked out. We wlll be staying at Arroyo Roble.

If you could only do 1 tour what would it be? Should we get reservations for a tour (3 of us) or wait until we're there?

We're driving to the south rim of the Grand Canyon for a 1 day trip. I bought an atlas map of Arizona but haven't really found a good set of directions from Sedona to the south rim entrance. Is there something basic and easy to follow? I tried mapquest but there are many variables for Grand Canyon National Park.

We have never been to this part of the country and I appreciate any helpful info you can offer.

Thanks,
Anne

My vote is definitely for the Pink Jeep tour. Have a wonderful trip.

Its a very easy drive, about 2 hours to the south rim. check mapquest for detailed instructions.

Oak creek canyon is more of a drive and a state park rather than a tour.

As you enter Sedona from the south, there is a Hyatt info office that offers Helo rides of the canyou for two if you attend their presentation. You might be able to sweet talk a third tix out of them. Its a great flight.

Hi there,
I second the Pink Jeep tours ~ and you can sign up as soon as you get there. The suggestion of taking the tour for tkts. is a good one. That's what we did ~ only we took the two First Class tkts. on the Verde Canyon Railway ...... whatever you choose, it's worth the tour, (at least we thought so), not long, beautiful, and best of all ~ no high pressure! It's beautiful country ~ enjoy your trip!

If you are looking for a convenient hiking day, go to Red Rock State Park, they have lots of easy trails and lots of Red Rocks to see and photo. Also, they have red dirt shirts that are cheaper than those in the "Uptown" shops near Arroyo Roble.

The Sedona tourist information center (chamber of commerce?) is located in uptown Sedona (you can walk from AR)...and has a very informative "magazine type" booklet that includes a very scenic drive (about 2 hours) to the South Rim of hte Grand Canyon. We followed those directions on our visit this summer....and had a great time. (We did splurge and spend one night at the GC...well worth the extra $$).
I also highly recommend the Pink Jeep Tour (we took the "Broken Arrow Tour"); and buying a Red Rock hiking pass. Our family never spent much time hiking prior to this trip...but we explored many of the trails during our week long stay.
We followed many of the recommended scenic drives and hikes in the booklets we picked up at the Chamber of Commerce....and were not disappointed.

Sedona & Surrounds

Hi Anne,
You should have a wonderful time at Sedona.
We went there 3 years ago and saw some pretty amazing stuff in the local area - although we did not take any tours. We packed a lot into our week but then we came from 1/2 way around the world so we weren't going to miss much.
Some great places to go are:
1. Grand Canyon - day trip
2. Red Rock Canyon
3. Montezuma's Castle
Montezuma's Well
Fort Verde (we did all 3 in one afternoon)
4. If you really want to see something awesome (apart from the Grand Canyon) and can stand the drive go to the Meteor Crater at Winslow. We also did the Painted Desert & Petrified Forest ( about 3 -4 hours each way).
5. The local arts and crafts are great so make sure you visit some of the galleries. We even found a great bead shop near the local library that the kids had a ball in.

Jerome

You should add the almost deserted town of Jerome to the list. It is about 30 miles away and it an old mining town. It offers spectacular views of the area. The other suggestions listed here are also good bets.

I agree with doing the Pink Jeep Tour - I have great pix from there!

It sounds like we did the same things Sage did - and I highly recommend all of them! The area is beautiful! Be sure to take a lot of film/memory for your camera.

it's beautiful there Anne, (Sedona). We own at The Ridge. You'll get some gorgeous digital pictures! And some of the nicest restaurants around.

I'm jealous!

Sedona is possibly the most beautiful place in the world. We haven't been there for a few years but have stayed at Arroyo Roble, Sedona Summit and Villas of Sedona. The location of Arroyo Roble is fantastic for walking to Sedona's Uptown. I liked the spacious 2 story floor plan and fireplaces of Arroyo Roble, even if the decor is a little dated.

No one mentioned Tlapaque (which I am for sure mis-spelling!) It is a small shopping area near Oak Creek at the "Y". Normally I don't go in for shopping but this place is special. The original builder designed it to look like Guadalajara, Mexico 400 years ago. So it is full of fountains and Mexican tiles, rosebushes and a tiny chapel.

With a car you can go to so many places in Sedona that don't require an all-day visit. An hour or so at the Tlapaque Village would suffice, and then go down the road to the Chapel of the Holy Cross for a short visit. A five minute trip up to airport road to see amazing visitas. All these things are located very close to Arroyo Roble. We did a helicopter flight out of the airport that is on top of Airport Road. The captain told us he also does flights out of the Grand Canyon, but Sedona was his favorite because the horizon is not flat like the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is pretty, but the saying goes that Sedona is her younger, prettier sister.:whoopie:

Bring lots of film!

Oak creek canyon is on 89a between Sedona and Flagstaff. 89a is a most senic drive. Oak creek canyon is just off the road and there are signs. You just park and get out and walk. You can walk 17 miles or you can walk 2 miles. We did it and went up about 5 miles and turned around. When we do it again I will want to stay longer and just relax on the rocks. So we would take some snacks.

Slide Rock is very pretty and its close by.

4 days isnt very long for that area..Maybe the day you go to Oak Creek you can go on to Flagstaff and go to Walnut Canyon. If you are into ruins at all that is very impressive.
