Scuba Lessons at Kaanapali?

Hi - I am going to be at WKORVN beginning next week for 10 days. Just wondering if anyone knows if they offer scuba lessons at Kaanapali? If not, anyone have suggestions where to take a beginners course near by?

They were offering them in March, when we were there.

My son and his friend did multiple dives with Extended Horizons out of Lahaina five years ago and spoke highly of them.

One location that Extended Horizons and other outfitters like for walk-in dives is Airport Beach, the beach adjacent to and directly south of WKORV.
 
I recommend doing your book course online prior to going on vacation. Then you will be ready to take your open water dives for certification.

I have been diving a long time and I have done some diving (150+). Ian and I really liked diving with B&B Scuba in Kihie. Brad is an excellent instructor. I watched him with the divers that he was certifying and he was careful and attentive.

The next year, when my sister was ready for her (second try at) open water dives, I had my sister do this. She was thrilled with Brad. She had been unable to get certified locally because she flunked the open water --- her mask kept leaking. Brad went down with her and carefully watched what was causing the leaking and made a few adjustments to fix it. She was then able to complete her open water with no problems.

This past year, my brother in law did the same thing. He really liked Brad, too.

It is a long drive and they are almost always the first boat over to Molokini.

I highly recommend them.

I got certified a few years ago from the company that operates out of WKORV. They were great and most of the "group" dives I did was just the instructor and myself, which was fantastic. The company has other locations at other hotels throughout Maui. I did several dives at the Sheraton at Black Rock, which is a great beach dive.

They offer a brief course and intro dive at a reasonable cost. Not having to drive or go elsewhere for a simple dive at the resort is worth a lot to me.

Is the online / class course a requirement To obtain your open water certificate? I also don't want to spend my whole vacation diving but want to begin the steps. Is it possible to do my confined water dives in one place, and then my open water dives at another to obtain certification? I'll be at harborside in three weeks so I could do those then.

It should only take 3 days to get your certification.
I did mine at the Roayal Haciendas last year.

I picked up the books when I got there and scheduled 3 days to dive.

For me it was easier to just do it. You never know what might come up in the future.

You will also need to be declared medically fit to dive prior to commencing the course.
 
We used the resort group to do a refresher. They were okay but hard to get a hold of to set up our time. I did feel more confident in the water after the experience.
 
It wasn't really 3 full days, but with the lessons and then the open water portion it was spread over 3 days. I just did the book work in the evenings.

Luckily for me the wife was willing to make the sacrifice of spending that time flaked out under a cabana on the beach.... :rofl:

I'd suggest that you ask the dive school what the requirements are.

In Australia, it needs to be a dive medical that meets Australian standards and only some doctors are certified to conduct the medical.

There is also a test to prove that you can swim.

Both Lahaina Divers and 3C Submerged are nearby and fine, if you dont like who they have there.
 
I'd definitely take the recommendation of a poster above who suggested that you do any classroom work you can back at home (such a shame to waste time in Hawaii in a room).

I've logged over a 100 of my dives with Lahaina Divers so I'm clearly going to recommend them (I did my Divemaster course through them) but I'm sure there are other good options too.

Personally, I'm getting close friends and family certified (it's a fantastic common interest) and I'll be using LD for this. Primarily because one of the sites they go to for certification purposes (as well as for regular dives), Mala Wharf, is only 26ft-28ft deep (very safe) and has about just about every type of reef fish you could hope to see on a single dive in Maui. Plus Turtles and cool small critters. You can really have a great dive experience while doing the courses.

Also, you may want to keep this in mind: Most dives in Maui are an early start (7am check-in) so finding something you're happy with close by may be important to you if you're not that keen on super early rises (that's my reason for not using dive shops in Kihei, Waileia etc... when I'm in Ka'anapali).

Whatever you end up doing I hope you have an amazing time, I started diving over 20 years ago and I've loved every second.
 
My daughter and I were certified at WRORV a few years ago. There was no medical clearance needed at that time. We did our dives from the resort- just walked out, except for the final dive which was at Black Rock. We met in the morning and it was only half the day- certainly a sacrifice but still felt like we plenty of the day left to do other things.
