Scary weird encounter

There are reasons why we book a 2 bedroom unit when we only need a one bedroom when traveling in timeshares with lock offs. This story just highlights the main reason. What isn’t noise to one couple is intolerable to another. We were once next to an elderly couple. Their general conversation level was enough to wake the dead IMHO. I can’t tell you the number of times es we’ve been disturbed by the simple act of opening and closing kitchen cabinets. My wife will go into the bedroom to watch TV if a timeshare puts the TV on a wall shared by the next unit. We’ve even had studio unit occupants opening their sliding door to let fresh air in, creating g a wind tunnel effect along with all the noise as wind travel under the door jam between units. There are a few timeshares we refuse to exchange into, simply because the structure has no insulation between units. It’s sad when just the act of walking across a room reverberates through another unit, not to mention what it sounds like when kids are just being kids (Palace View in Branson always comes to mind for this one)

Most aren’t as forward as the gentleman you encountered. I would never approach another Guests door after hours, or any other time of the day for that matter, to many crazy people there. You open the door and there’s a gun in the other side, I don’t care what your training might be, you don’t move faster than a finger squeezing a trigger. No front desk person? Personally, I wouldn’t answer the door and call 911 next time. Nothing good happens after midnight.

It’s probably a good idea to look for resorts with a 24 hour desk as an amenity. Perhaps the neighbor called the front desk to complain, just like you did, only to have the call go unanswered. No excuse for his knocking on your door at that hour but it sure would throw gas in an already smoldering fire if he couldn’t reach anyone to call your unit. We don’t exchange much but this looks like something I’ll add to my list as a requirement for any exchange.

Second Doug’s comments.
I will never forget the stay in a lock off at summer bay. The kids played in the hall area between the lock offs every morning and late into the evening. There were three but it sounded like a dozen.
Plus previous residents apparently took most of the silverware and utensils into the other side and front desk didn’t understand the word utensils.

I can remember staying in a lock off unit in Florida and the children next door would beat on the wall liked it were a set of drums. Yes! We called the front desk and we were kindly moved to a one bedroom villa.

Penny - You have lived an amazing life!
- You grew up with a father in the special forces, and he taught you how to protect yourself.
- As an adult, you must have done very well for yourself, because you have traveled 180 days a year for 40 years.
- All of your kids went to Ivy League colleges.
- You have a home in the Bahamas, or was it the Caribbean?

Truly impressive!

I guess I am not sure why your background or who you work for even matters? Traveling as much as you do, something like this was bound to happen at some point. There are quite a few people here that travel a lot, it doesn't make them or us any more special than anyone else. We've personally never had someone knock on our door and complain about noise, though we are relatively quiet. It seems that there was something unique about dice on a table that the neighbor could hear through the door that was bothering them. Perhaps his approach wasn't the best, but as long as he wasn't violent or threatening then I am not sure of the major concern. With all the different people in the world, some people just come across in a different way. We don't know their situation, what was bothering them that day, that evening or something else. We just learn to let live and move on.

I agree
But the comment on Denise was directed to her questioning my background, a change from the original post obviously… so I called her out on it
Provided her with way too much personal information that certainly wasn’t required, but I do feel when someone questions your honesty or integrity you are required to, just plain and simple
And if you’ll notice… hours later she has yet to reply
A simple apology works
I’m over 60, easy to move on from things and start fresh
But zero response … 🤔

Maybe, just maybe, she wasn't questioning your background, but marveling at it. I also fail to see where she questioned your honesty or integrity. Thus no apology required. It certainly is an unusual history.

But I'm starting to see a pattern here and why you reacted to the situation the way you did a little bit more now.

This does not resolve the source of the grinding noise question. Front desk may be gone but is there no security patrol on site?

I do not blame you for being concerned and not opening the door. What if you were asleep and he came to your door with the same complaint - especially with no security to respond on site.

Hope you can get some rest. IMHO...I would request to change rooms in case he is a weirdo.

That’s the way I read it. I assumed that she was impressed with her background. A lot of people on this forum have led really cool lives.

Yes, I agree with this.

I don't want you feeling unwelcome because of some comments, @Pennytx

There are many different opinions here on TUG and I am also a person who has been offended by various people, a few who have commented on this thread, as though these men have any idea how frightening it is to be a woman being confronted by a stranger who happens to be a man.

It's partly because these posters sit behind the mask of a username and say whatever comes to mind, knowing there will be no one to chastize or ridicule what they have to say. Anonymous does create some nasty people. There are TUG rules against rude behavior, but it's all subjective, and if the moderators agree with the other posters, you will be bullied, and that is truth.

I do appreciate the Wyndham forum on TUG because I think the moderator is always fair. He doesn't allow the bullying and sets a tone of a more kind back and forth most of the time. One particular poster has been kicked off multiple times after many warnings, basically changing his name and coming back for the attack under a new "nom de plume." Another poster has remained in the fray, jumps on the entire renting of Wyndham soapbox, which is very much past tense and doesn't happen anymore. I was one of the "mega renters," and apparently deserve whatever he dishes out, as long as he stays "on the side of the owners who were hurt by the rentals." I would say he is just bitter that he didn't take advantage when he could. And maybe this person is a she and not a he.

I always point out that I learned everything I know from TUG about renting and buying smart and converting to get status in Wyndham cheaply. I love TUG and am loyal to this wonderful BBS but I find the moderation to be quite one-sided at times.

For the most part, noise isn't an issue with us because we always have ear plugs.

We use the Amazon Del Norte Ocean Sounds Sleep video on the provided TV, which runs 10 hours. I love that ocean sound. It covers up all noise. We use it at home as well as on vacation. We could get robbed and wouldn't wake up.

Wyndham's internet is so archaic with the limit on devices and the speed is terrible. Wyndham LaCascada in San Antonio was the absolute worst. We couldn't even use the internet, it was so slow. Wyndham is way behind with internet access. I am completely unimpressed with it, considering the money we pay for "program fees." We should have internet like the Marriott resorts have. We trade into Marriott and Westin and never have internet issues.

WorldMark and Wyndham owners should revolt, but who will listen? They get their money anyway.

We buy the resort net internet package every year. I think it went up quit a bit this year. It's strange in this time of everything internet that internet access isn't included for all guests.

What an incredibly sexist and bigoted comment. You know nothing about other's gender or identity, or their response to this situation.

Regardless, I went back and re read this thread. I see no posts of anyone saying the situation shouldn't be frightening. No one (other than OP) said anything about the gender of either party affecting the situation.

To the contrary, myself and others acknowledged that it could be intimidating and opening the door would not be a great idea (not sure if she did or not.) In fact OP was the one who equivocated on whether she was intimidated or not.

I didn't say anything "sexist." That's ludicrous. Men and women are different.

Also keep in mind that Denise is a moderator and can delete comments that she considers to be offensive or political, which she frequently does. Only she knows her intent with her comments.

When anyone comments no one can tell your tone. Things can be misinterpreted or a remark can be intentionally hurtful. It is hard to tell.

It was midnight and someone was knocking at the door. This is not only unsafe for the person in the room to answer but also could be unsafe for the person knocking. Who knows what type of person is inside the room and whether they pack for self-defense?

I am not accusing the OP of this because she sounds rational but this is also why it is better to let security handle such situations on both sides of the complaint.
