We are heading to HHI for the week of Feb. 22 - 27. We want to take a trip to Savannah for the day. I was reading a thread sometime ago on tug that gave lots of information on things to do and see while there. Now I can not fine that thread. If anyone has any suggestions for things not to miss while we're down there please let me know. Will it be cold in Savannah in Feb.?

Take a trolly tour that lets you get off at various stops and catch another trolly. You will want to walk down River Street and enjoy the river. There are lots of places to eat on River Street. We like the Shrimp House. Lunch is also good at Mrs. Wilkes boarding house on Jones Street. It is served family style so you sit with folks who are in line with you. You can't make reservations and need to get in line early. There is a web site if you google it. I prefer it over Paula Deen's Ladies and Sons, but if you are a Paula Deen fan, you may want to try it.
We loved the Olde Pink House restaurant. I just posted some info on our trip to Savannah on the romantic HH thread.

If you haven't already - look at the small red task bar at the top of Tug pages
- click on the "Tug Home" hyperlink.
When you get to the Tug home page - near the top you'll see a bottle with
a "Search Tug" box in the middle of the bottle. Click on the box, that will take you to a new page - scroll down a little and put "Savannah" in the Google Search box. This Google search of the Tug Site is much more comprehensive than the internal search engine which as many know has limitations. You'll get a lot of hits for previous Tug threads about Savannah.

Just did the trolley tour last week (Old Towne). Very good. There are several from which to choose, so ask about details so you get the one that best meets your needs. Ate at Paula Dean's. Hated it. Mostly fried food - artery clogging stuff. Check out the restaurants on River Street for either lunch or dinner.

We live about an hour from Savannah and it is one of my favorite places on earth with its historic mansions, 21 beautiful squares and riverfront.
A trolley tour would give you a great overview and just riding around the various squares with their monuments, benches, fountains and trees full of Spanish moss is a treat. Forsythe Park is lovely any time of the year, although not much is in bloom until later February or March. I agree with the recommendation for the Old Pink House restaurant--I think it is one of the best in town and I never take visitors to Paula Deen's place--very overated in my opinion. Also don't miss the old civil war graveyard with the "wall graves" and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Harris Street. It reminds me of some of the European Cathedrals. Some of the historic homes are open for tours and the architecture is awesome.
As to the temps, it rarely freezes in this part of GA, but February is our coldest month with daytime temps ranging from the 40's to 50's. Enjoy!

I would strongly recommend going a day or two early or staying a day or 2 late so that you can spend a night and at least 2 days in Savannah. You will be missing so mch if you try and see it in a day. I was there for 2 days/one night, and wish I had spent the whole week there instead of going to HH. If there was a timeshare in Savannah I would trade for a week there in a heartbeat.
As i said on the other thread, we loved staying the night in the Gastonian bed and breakfast. http://www.gastonian.com/ Read the reviews and I can assure you that the accolades are deserved.
There are rooms at the Gastoniana available for the 21st and 22nd or the 27th and 28th for $219 a night. These are weekends so they require a 2 night stay, but you will not get bored with Savannah in 3 days or a week. If not here, at least stay in a holiday Inn or other chain in Savannah for at least one night. You will be so glad that you did.

I agree completely. There is far too much to see and do in Savannah to make it just a brief day trip. To each his/her own, but I'll readily admit and openly state (even at the risk of being assaulted here) that HHI did little or nothing for me personally during a few days spent there. Savannah has history, culture, architectural beauty, charm. HHI has.....water, money, condos by the dozens and more recently, a few disappeared millionaires. :ignore:

I totally agree. My husband and I hated HHI and left early during a week's exchange there and went to Savannah instead (where my in-laws live).
Many thanks everyone.....Can't wait to go to Savannah and will plan on at least one night to stay over. Sounds wonderful.

I was there 2 weeks ago for a conference. Agree with the Paula Deen comments. The food was too salty and not very tasty. I'd eat somewhere else next time. We ate on the riverfront also and I didn't like that food much, either. Too touristy.
If you ever were a Girl Scout, the childhood home of Juliette Gordon Low is in Savannah and they offer tours. It's a nice way to see an antebellum home of moderately wealthy people of Savannah, plus get some Girl Scout history. We also did a Ghost Tour, which is a glorified pub crawl. Fun to hear the stories, the hosts tell good stories, and drinking lots of beer is optional.
