Santa Fe with Children

What is there to do with children in the Santa Fe area with Children in the summer. We are looking to take our two grandsons (ages 6 & 8) with us in the first part of July, 2009. We are OK with day trips. And will be staying at Las Brisas de Santa Fe.

One of the things we did last year when we visited was to visit Bandalier National Monument. http://www.nps.gov/band/

A few years ago we took a "ghost walk" at night which was a fun way to see some of the town, hear the history, and find out about the ghosts. I think I found the information through one of the tourism sites.

My "kids" are much older (18 and 20 now) but I think both of these would have interested them even in younger years.

Museum Hill has four museums that have cool stuff. The International Folk Art museum is particularly good for kids.

Also - there is now a commuter train that runs between Albuquerque and Santa Fe - you can pick it up in downtown Santa Fe and get off at various points in Albuquerque, including a downtown stop where you can pick up a bus or cab that will take you to Albuquerque's Old Town, which is itself an attraction but also is close to the Explora! Children's Museum, the Museum of Natural History (big dinosaurs) which also has a planetarium and IMAX theater attached, and the Albuquerque Museum (New Mexico history and then also art, of moderate interest to kids). nmrailrunner.com is the website address for the train. Note that right now the train is only scheduled to run on weekdays - but they recently did some test runs on the weekends and response was so huge it's almost certain (according to a well-placed source of mine that they'll add regular weekend trains by summer.

While at the International Folk Art Museum, be sure to go downstairs where there are two steel drums the kids can play.

In addition to the other activities in Albuquerque, you and the kids might like to take a ride up the tram to the top of the Sandia Mountains.

Probably too far off your path, but we like to take visitors to Acoma Pueblo, about an hour east of Albuquerque. A unique experience.
