I will be going to a meeting next week in San Francisco and my boss and I are staying an extra day so we can sight see on our own. Neither of us have been to San Francisco before and are wondering what we should see? We can rent a car if we have to and are open to any advice you may have. We will have one full day, Saturday.
I am really excited about this!

Thanks so much in advance for all of your guidance.
Sue

We just did this last month and we took a bus tour - Alcatraz in the morning, city tour in the afternoon. The traffic around San Francisco is horrible - we saw the highlights of the city at least and we never would have been able to get around as efficiently on our own.

Definitely do Alcatrez. If you have a rental car you can drive a 23 mile loop that starts in Chinatown; it takes you to most of the key spots and sites. Yoy can finish up with a nice meal at Aliotta at fisherman's wharf. My wife and I did it in 1 day a couple of years ago.

we love to take the trolley to fisherman's wharf, alcatraz, etc.

trolley one way---you're there--you have to do it! Then boat tour that goes over to alcatraz. Chinatown, Telegraph hill, etc. I would not rent a car--just trolley and cab.

If you rent s car, I like to go over bridge to Sausilito (sp?).

We walked across the Golden Gate. What a blast!! This maybe isn't what I'd do if I only had one day in the city but we loved it.

Take a look at the TUG Guides to sightseeing and dining in San Francisco. I put a lot of time into those guides, and all of my recommendations on sightseeing and dining are in there.

Sue - I have a lot of info. about SF on my travel page at www.freewebs.com/denisetravels

You really don't want to rent a car in SF - traffice is horribl and parking is worse. Public transportation is cheap and easy and SF proper is a small area.

More information

I found out today that we will actually be staying in Walnut Creek at an Embassy Suites which is right next to a BART station. This sounds like it should make sightseeing easier maybe?
Thank you so much for all of your great links and advice. Does anything change now that I know exactly where we are staying? One place I really wanted to see was the Muir Woods. Would this be possible from where we are located? All of the other suggestions sound very interesting also.
At our location what would be the best use of our time?

Thank you so much for all of your help with this.

Sue

The Embassy Suites hotel is adjacent to Pleasant Hill BART station. It will cost about $9 round trip to get into the SF Financial District. It is a 42 minute ride one-way.
Please note: Although the Embassy Suites is technically in the town of Walnut Creek, it is NOT near the Walnut Creek BART station. It is next to the Pleasant Hill BART station. On your ride back from SF, stay on the BART train one more stop after the Walnut Creek BART station until you reach the Pleasant Hill BART station to get to your hotel. Here is the link to BART.

In SF, if you get off at the 1st SF station, Embarcadero, you can walk along the waterfront to Pier 39. It's about a mile, but a very nice, flat walk.

If you go to the 3rd SF stop, Powell Street Station, you will be 2 blocks from Union Square. As you get out of the station, you will see the Cable Car turn around at 5th & Market St. You can take that Cable Car to Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39.

Cheers,
Maria

I would not try to get to Muir Woods and see San Francisco in a day. Muir Woods is about 45 minutes away and when we tried to go the parking was awful. Just enjoy San Francisco, walk along the waterfront, walk around Union Square, take a cable car ride (the easiest to get on is the California Hyde line down by the Hyatt around first and Market, or maybe 3rd and Market.) Great ethnic restaurants with every kind of food you can imagine. Definitely have some clam chowder and sour dough bread. Have a drink at the top of the Hyatt (opens at 5 PM) and watch the city as you rotate (at least what the new buildings aren't blocking.)

Greetings:
We are also off to SF next Saturday for a week, but our stay is at the World Mark in Windsor. I've heard that the weather there is unpredictable. How should we pack for 11/4-11/06? Thanks for any suggestions.

hajjah:
I presume you will be driving into SF.

On the upstairs level of Pier 39, is the Visitor's Center. Show your AAA card, and they will give you a parking card for 2 hours free parking at the Pier 39 garage across the street. It saved us over $12. I do not know if you can do this on subsequent days, or if it limited to once per card.

Until the fog burns off (early afternoon) in SF, you will need a jacket. On a sunny afternoon, you may be able to get away with a sweatshirt or a light sweater.

We're going to be at WM Windsor 11/10 for an owners' get-together.

Thanks hudshut. I really appreciate this information. Yes, we will be driving into SF, so I am sure that parking will be an issue. How long is the drive from WM? Also, is the SF Airport about a two hour ride to the resort? Any suggestions for restaurants near the resort and/or at Fisherman's Wharf? We love seafood.

Oh, I forgot about the previous posts. They have some great information as well.
Thanks for your help.

BTW, if we park at the Pier 39 garage for the day, does anyone know how much that would be about after the AAA discount? We're planning to do the Alcatraz and City Tours.

There is a transfer to a Street Car (Classic) that will also take you to FW/P39 from Embacadero

If you are doing SF on the weekend, there are some city parking garages that are relatively inexpensive. I used the one diagonally across from Hyatt off Union Station the last time I was there. It was a lot cheaper than Valet parking.
