I tried a search for recent information regarding this resort but didn't find anything (I probably did it wrong). I'm considering adding a few nights after my week at Desert Springs. Has anyone stayed there recently and have suggestions. Do owners have to pay the $42 parking nightly fee? I'm considering turning in my rental car and walking using Uber for the stay. I tried NCV but they had no availability for my desired dates.

Parking fees apply to all guests who have a vehicle.

We were there in March. Owners do pay the parking fee. There are a few other parking garages within walking distance to the resort but I didn’t check them out.
We downloaded the Pronto app and used metro to get around town. The nearest bus stop is approx 2 blocks away.

Did you enjoy your stay? I probably won't keep my rental car and would walk/Uber to destinations. The zoo appears to be a short Uber ride and Maritime museum and Little Italy appear to be walkable. We enjoy walking if the area is safe.

Jumping in here. We enjoyed our stay at the resort a few years ago. As you said, the zoo and the rest of Balboa Park are a short ride or a longer uphill walk away. We like to walk as well, so we did that. We also walked to Little Italy for dinner and didn’t encounter any issues. We also walked to the Gaslamp District, which is about a half mile away. There were a couple of homeless people that we passed on the other side of the road, but didn’t have any issues there either.

We had our own car, so we chose to park it at the “Park It on Market” parking structure, which is at 6th and Market. We dropped off our luggage at the resort, parked the car and walked back to the resort. It’s about 6/10 of a mile. It cost about half the amount the resort charges and it is covered parking whereas I was told the resort uses an uncovered lot.

As you know, the resort is a City Collection offering, so it is not a traditional resort. However, the unit was comfortable and enabled us to stay in downtown San Diego.

There is a service in the Gaslamp area called Circuit it used to be called FRED. It’s electric carts that take you around Gaslamp. It used to be a free service, now they charge $2.50 per person or $5 per group. I have been picked up from MVC and taken to Petco Park and down to Seaport Village beats having to find parking.

There are homeless around downtown, but haven’t encountered any issues.

We stayed at the SD MVC for two nights last year and very much liked the villa, ‘resort’, and location. It’s all 1BR (though you can reserve two connecting villas), the onsite bar/restaurant was perfectly reasonable for breakfast and drinks, and it’s an easy walk around the Gaslamp and short Uber ride everywhere else.

We loved our stay at the MVC in SD…We went to the Zoo…attended a Padres game…took a tour over to LaJolla…which was absolutely beautiful and walked around the Gaslamp area…We had a high floor unit and watched the planes go by landing at the airport….weather was fabulous…

Other than the poor air quality we enjoyed our stay. Over all a nice resort. Their bar and grill served a good breakfast at a reasonable price for the area. While there are homeless in the area we generally felt safe enough to walk around. While the resort isn’t too far from most things, it’s definitely not a prime location.

In case you haven’t seen them

We stayed here frequently the past few years. Our favorite donut joint, Donut Bar, used to be right down the street but it’s still easy access at about 15 minutes away by foot. The SD Symphony in the building is a nice plus if you are into that. Parking wise, there are lot less expensive options nearby if you wish to steer clear of the onsite parking. Airport is a short hop away by Uber/Lyft and the surface bus if you don’t mind walking 2-3 blocks (just watch the homeless)

We will likely take Amtrak to San Bernardino and rent a car there to drive to Palm Desert. I will likely either drop the car back off and take Metrolink from San Bernardino to LA Union station and then take the Surfliner to San Diego, or I will drive the rental car to San Diego airport to drop it off. I don't think I will keep the car in SD.

Poor air quality in March? Was there a fire? I have lived here for over 30 years and have never experienced poor air quality in March (or really any other time other than if there is a brush fire.)

I haven't been to the San Diego Airport since late 2023. At that time they were doing construction at the Airport and things were in a real mess (area roads).

Does anyone know if that construction is now 100% complete ?

Not even close. But realistically it adds little time to your journey.

And the new T1 parking plaza just opened adding 5,200 new spaces.

Compared to KS, yep. We’d get up on the morning and see the nice orange haze above the city. If you’re use to it, my bet is you won’t notice it.

It is called fog or marine layer. It is water vapor you can see. Maybe you only have tornados in Kansas. San Diego does not have poor air quality, certainly not in March.

Air quaity does I believe depend on what's happening over the Border

All I can say is my wife’s lungs disagree. The fog in Kansas is white. What we were seeing had the orangish color of smog. Sure it’s better than LA, but it’s not that great. We have a similar issue in Denver. It’s better/worse at different times of the year, but it’s never great.

Kansas has its own issues. For instance, Kansas is one of the worst places to live if you suffer from allergies.

We are going to Palm Springs in October this year and we had thought it would be nice to drive in our rental car to San Diego for a day trip, this thread has some great suggestions of things to do and see...

I really enjoyed San Diego. There’s several museums over in Balboa Park. The water front was enjoyable. We took the ferry over to Coronado and spent an afternoon. A few restaurants with nice views looking back at the San Diego skyline. It’s a really nice city to visit

My mentioned a large model railroad display that he thought was in Balboa Park. Did you see it or do you know where it might be. I always love visiting the zoo both for the wildlife and plants.

I didn’t see it, but we were only in town for three nights. We did a trolley tour and I don’t recall a railroad museum being mentioned.

We live in the cultural center of the universe. Wichita, Kansas (sarcasm). Essentially an old cow town that grew into a small city.
