What San Antonio resort is recommended? Thanks in advance for any suggestions of things to do or see while there.

We stayed at Las Cascada recently. It was very nice, great pool area. But the location, although right downtown, is not the best. We are going to Riverside Suites the end of the month, I have heard that the location is great, right on the river, in the heart of the action, but no pool.

Riverside. We were on an upper floor with a hot tub that overlooked the Riverwalk. From there you can walk or take public transportation to get around. Nice room in an old building. Odd room layout, though. You can't beat the location!!! Enjoy.

We stayed at La Cascada and loved it! We walked the River Walk loop every day. HEB grocery store close enough to easily walk to and they let us use a cart to take our groceries back to La Cascada. It is close enough that my husband was back from returning the cart by the time I had the groceries put away and sandwiches started.

Make sure you check out the deals on Groupon and Living Social for restaurants and things to do in San Antonio. We enjoyed every place we ate with the ones we bought.

We took the advice the front desk people gave when I called and didn't rent a car as you pay to park. They recommended we talk to them and see what things we wanted to do that would require a car and just rent one for a couple of days instead of our entire stay. We ended up not renting one at all as we loved San Antonio and knew we'd be back so could do the outlying stuff then. Now here is the best part. Instead of taking a taxi to the resort I figured if parking is at a premium and expensive then they likely have an excellent bus system to get all the people to work. I looked online and printed out the schedule we needed. You literally walk out the airport door and the bus stop is right there. We did have to walk a block and a half to La Cascada from where we got off but that is what wheeled luggage is for so not a big deal. It was only $1.35 each to ride the bus and we got to look around instead of worrying about traffic and finding our way. My husband was a little doubtful when I told him about my plan but I told him we were going to be adventurous and that we could always take a taxi for the return trip to the airport if we didn't like the bus or were in any way uncomfortable about being on it. It worked out so well that we even took the bus to get back to the airport for our flight home!

1. The Missions
2. The Alamo
3. King William Historic area
4. San Fernando Cathedral 24-minute show by French artist Xavier De Richemont, in which lights projected onto the cathedral tell the story of San Antonio from its beginning to today. Show times are 9, 9:30 and 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
5. The Blue Star Brewing Company is located at the beginning of the Mission Reach, a major bike friendly and pedestrian thoroughfare to the city’s cultural and historical features that run along the San Antonio River. Turn left when you leave the resort and walk along the river! Good beer and food!
6. The SAS shoe factory and General Store are located at 101 New Laredo Hwy, San Antonio, Texas. Tour and especially the outlet store.

We loved La Cascada and you can get to the riverwalk easily from it. Definitely visit the missions and the riverwalk but if you have a vehicle take a ride over to Bandera and up through Hill County. Several little old German settled towns Boerne, Gruene and New Braunfels to name a few. A lot of wineries up in hill country if you like that sort of thing.

Definitely Riversuites. Walk to the Alamo, overlook the river, great places to eat, old style rooms that are huge. When you pull to the place you think what did I get into? The staff is great and will help you anyway they can. If I remember right it was built around 1920 as a YMCA but has been redone

We stayed at LaCasada and walked everywhere in the area, including the Alamo. Not a good location, however, for anyone who has limited mobility. We took the bus to missions. We also did a step on/step off bus tour. From the airport we took a cab. Back to the airport we used Lyft. About half price ($17 or $18 as I recall).

Thanks for the great info. Going to stay here in Sep for a conference at the Convention Center. Always good to know the grocery stores etc.

We went for spring break with our kids 8 and 11 this April. We actually stayed in a 2 bedroom at the Marriott Residence Inn Alamo (right behind the Alamo!). It was fantastic, but if you can stay on the Riverwalk with an exchange I'd recommend that even more. Our favorite things were:

The Alamo
Natural Bridge Cavern tour (LOVED THIS!!)
Boat Tour of the Riverwalk
Dinner Ghost Tour of the Menger Hotel (did this with my 11 year-old and it was fabulous! Our tour guide was Mark, and he's awesome if you can get him)
The artist's village/shopping area near to Riverwalk
If you have young kids, there is an amazing kids' park at Hemisfair Park. We went there a lot.
Six Flags

If we'd been there a few weeks later, we would also have gone to the Schlitterbahn. It was closed when we were there.
