Sales Presentations?

I am preparing for my first stay and wanted to know more about the Wyndham sales presentation.

1) Do all resorts try to get you to a presentation? Even if your stay is only 1 night?

2) Can you refuse the presentation?

3) Do they always offer the same gift for coming? A AMEX gift card? Same amount? Can you negotiate for more when they try to get you to sign up?

I appreciate input on this. We have 2 resales and are not planning on purchasing more, but I am guessing I'll end up at an Owners Update and want to be prepared.

Most resorts will try to get you to a presentation. How hard a sell depends on the location. I am not sure the length of stay matters to them. Of course you can refuse the presentation. It may come up in different forms (we'll come to your room to do a "check-in" survey, for example). Just say no to all forms. Usually the invitation comes when you are getting your parking pass.

They do not always offer the same gift. It is very possible that they will up the offer if you say no. That was my experience at Bonnet Creek.

No matter how well prepared you are, you are likely to hear some "spin" at an owner update that will basically be some form of:

"you have a problem"
"we have a solution"
"the solution is more XYZ points purchased here with today-only special pricing"

There is no need to waste your precious vacation time:

Don't sign up.

Don't go to "get your parking pass," - tell them you don't have a car with you.

Don't go to the sales area.

Unplug the phones in your unit.

Don't let them in, if they come to the door.

They will tell you that they do, but it's just a gimmick to get you to sign up for a sales presentation - we never get one.

It only comes in handy if your car is damaged. Your alarm is going off and it won't stop. They need to have you move it for some emergency, etc.

I often keep an older parking pass and throw it up on the window. I have yet to see anyone wasting their time walking around checking parking passes.

If the parking pass line is not too long I'll get one, but that's the last they hear of me. Say no, unplug your phone, don't answer the door. Issue closed.

The only exception might be in a resort with limited indoor parking or where they feel an outsider may sneak in to skip paying local area high parking prices.

Short, sweet and to the point!

Amount of bribe varies from ditty bag, baseball cap or welcome kit to around $150 cash in USA.

Mexico a different world.

I just got back from Branson Meadows...they gave me my parking pass without any mention of a presentation, however they asked a couple of times for me to fill out a survey for my arrival gifts. Didn't waste my vacation time. They also did not take a credit card at check-in. I second the advice to unplug your phone..

Just a thought. One time within the past couple of years they had someone come to my room before I had even moved all my luggage in. I was in the process of returning the suitcase cart. Now that's what I call aggressive sales.

We went to our first ever "owners update" this morning (weather is lousy in Hawaii right now). Got $100 AMEX card and two free breakfast vouchers for about 75 mins...there really wasn't a "hard sell"; he looked up my info, I informed him I bought on the secondary market and the sales guy started asking me if I knew what my benefits were and what I was "missing out" on. I told him yes and he asked me how I knew and I told him I had been a TUG member for over a year now and all of the research I had done here before we bought.

When we went to the big island, I remember talking to Melanie and I can tell you that she was tough... She started showing me pictures when she got like sales master of the year or something like that with all the Wyndham executives and even after I told her that I read the TUG forum and that I won't ever buy from developer, so she looks at me and says "but, I'm saving you money" ... After the presentation she kept texting me offering deals.

I hate that parking pass tango crap and as test I left the parking pass at the room just to see if someone checked and they don't check for that crap. I got stopped once, because I wasn't driving to the check-in area, after I told the dude where I was going he was cool...
