I know there are a lot of variables here. I'm curious who RVs and is it a better alternative to renting hotels.

I'm getting the impression that RVs don't really save money. I could be wrong.

An RV won't save you money, necessarily, as you still have to store it, register, insure it and maintain it when you aren't away from home.

Many in my family are RV people, I chose timeshares instead. Easier to store, maintenance bills are on a regular schedule.

Yes I am taking the cats. It would cost more than $1200 to leave at the pet sitters house. The same for her to come to my house. I don't want them alone in a house for two months. I have nowhere free to take them. I worry they will get loose, chew on something they shouldn't, and just be a pain sometimes but it is what it is.

I used to have a great cat that loved to travel and a large motor home. That was easier and fun. He loved to lay in the front window and watch the seagulls. We really miss him. He was quite the camper.

Cats for you, Dogs for me. A petsitter works for a weekend, but not 2 or three months at a time

Its why I wanted a second home. Timeshares dont work because they generally dont allow pets. I ended up buying a boat There was the initial cost which Im amortizing over 10 years (60000/10= $6000/yr) Then dock fees ($10000/yr) Maintenance and repairs, Im budgeting at $10000 a year, so roughly $25000 a year for our planned 6 months in California. So the way I figure it $1000 a week

Thats roughly the same cost I projected when i thought I was going to be using timeshare in lieu of a second home

I briefly considered an RV but the initial cost was more than the boat. I would have left it at a park year round and the monthly rate at one resort I looked at in San Diego was more than it costs to dock my boat

By the way, everything was compared to buying a second home. For a condo on the water, (Purchase price at least $500000; condo fees plus taxes, $1000 a month) which was out of the question for me.

I know I should consider salvage value, but Im not... I have the same exit strategy for my boat as I do for my timeshares... death
