I'm training with a local running group here at home which is training for the LA Marathon. The group makes a long training run on Saturday mornings, which I intend to mirror while traveling.

In mid-November we go to W. Maui for a week. I arrive on a Saturday and depart on Saturday, both of which are running days with scheduled 8 mile and an 18 mile run respectively on the training calendar. I'm thinking as these are travel days I'll likely run these distances the Sunday after we arrive and the Friday prior to leaving. We will be in W.Maui and am wondering if anyone has route recommendations for making such long runs, particularly the 18 miler?

Normally I just get out the car, drive half the distance from where I'll be starting, note the turnaround point and run back the way I came. A little boring but effective. Alternately I could run 18 miles straight and get my wife to pick me up.

Any thoughts, other than it's LONG?

Route 30 is well marked with mile markers. My husband jogged from the Westin Villas to Lahaina most morning -- about 6 miles round trip, IIRC. Personally, I think north toward Kapalua is a nicer jog. Just note the mile marker where you start, stop when you're +4, then return.

18 miles might be trickier. In that event, I might want to get a ride to Lahaina, run north for 9 miles then return. At some point north of D.T. Fleming Beach, the road starts to wind and you lose your shoulder. Not sure I'd want to go past that or risk being mowed down like a bowling pin.
