Royals' beaches - swimmable?

We are thinking of trading into one of the Royals in October. Are the beaches swimmable? We have two small children (3 & 6) and although they don't go into the water too much, we want to make sure that if they do venture in (with an adult, of course) that it would be safe.

Also, are the beaches good for walking?

Sorry if these seem like silly questions. We have never been to Cancun.

Thanks

Depends on the weather but with children that small you'll probably want to use the beach at VCI which is sheltered and never has heavy surf. Even on a quiet day there will be surf at the Sands and the Tri-Royals.

We were in Canacun in Ocotber a couple of years ago. The beaches were great and depending on the time of day, you can wade in far before you have be able to swim. When the waves pick up, then fun starts, we enjoy the waves which is why we go to Cancun. You should be careful with children, depending on how good they can swim, they will love it. I have seen toddlers with floaties and mom of course venture in waves with no problem. pick the right part of the beach where it is very shallow for long ways in. In front of the tri royals there several long shoals where you can walk way in before it starts to get deep. enjoy.....

We just got back from VCI today. This is our first trip to Cancun too. Our kids are 10 and 7 and they love water. They complained about the rough rocks at the VCI beach. I should have packed swimming shoes for them if I knew. We went to Royal Sands one day. The waves there were perfect for them on that day. They spent lots of time in the pools. Both resorts have great pools.

Any other thing about the beach at the Royal sand is that there is a sudden drop of at least 5-6 feet near shoreline. Therefore, I cannot see the kids at all from where they put the beach chairs. It might be part of the recovery still. I am not sure since I have never been there.

The drop off on the beach is not normal, it is related to the beach restoration work. I have seen some reports that say it will settle naturally and others that say the contractor has to come back and do it, not sure which is correct but the same wall was there almost a month ago when we walked from the Royal Mayan to the Royal Sands so it doesn't seem to be going down on its own.

(We always wear swimming shoes on the beach because you never know when you might step on something sharp even on a well maintained beach.)

We just got back yesterday from the Royal Caribbean. The surf was rough and I know I really don't think they could do to much in the ocean. Many youngsters played in the sand. I'm not sure I would let that deter my plans though. We had a wonderful time. It was our first time to Cancun also. It was one of our best trips to date. The water was beautiful, the beach was great. The drop-off was only 5 inches or so. No problem. I didn't see the 5 foot drop-off at the Sands but we didn't venture out on the beach. No rocks in the water either at the Tri-Royals.
