I am wondering what to watch out for when I get off the plane in MX to go to the Royal Mayan.

Will there be people trying to get me in their cabs? Get me to go on TS tours, trying to get me to stop?

How will I know how to find the pick up van from the Royal Mayan?

You get to the resort in a van, either shared or private. You can pre-arrange online or just arrange for it as you exit the airport. Prices are fairly similar either way.

If you pre-arrange, you have several choices, all good:
  1. go to royalresorts.com and scroll down till you see on the left something about airport transportation or transfers. That'll take you to Thomas More, owned by the Royal Resorts. The advantage is that the cost will appear on your resort bill.
  2. go to cancunvalet.com or entertainment-plus.net or cancuntransfers (not sure if it's .net or .com). Excellent services, all vans are private, so it's going to cost more unless there are about 4 of you. I prefer Cancun Valet b/c you can use your charge card from home. E + takes cash, part on your trip to the resort, part on the trip back.

The services will send you a detailed email about where to find their vans.

If you don't prearrange, you can arrange for similar van service at the airport. After you pick up your luggage, go through the customs station, and walk past the timeshare tour people, you will see a kiosk right in the center of the walkway - I believe it is labeled Grey Lines. It is the only countertop/kiosk in the middle, and it is right before you would walk outside. Stop there and you can book a one way trip on a van. You will be able to pay in dollars. Not sure of the current rate, but I think it is around $10-ish per person one way. The representative will direct you to a van.

Re the Timeshare tour people - AKA Sharks - on the way to your van, whether pre-arranged or not, you will walk through a gauntlet of people trying to get you to sign up for timeshare tours. Keep walking, do not stop, do not let them take your luggage, do not take, sign, or pay anything. They will say Royal Resorts? Thomas More? Ignore them, they do not represent the Royals or More.

I will be checking in at the Royal Sands on 9/5 and the Royal Islander on 9/12. If you want to get together for a margarita or something, let me know.

I suggest going with Thomas More. It's just easier. The info you got above is correct. You will see folks with signs saying Royal Resorts, RCI, Thomas More, etc. Just walk right past them and outside.

I have another recommendation for Cancun Valet. We use them every time. They are very convenient, reliable, and are always waiting for you as you exit the airport. They are also inexpensive for private airport transportation, as compared to Thomas Moore. (SO MUCH nicer to have private transportation, as you do not have to share the van with people you do not know, and you will go directly to YOUR resort, as opposed to having to stop at the other people's resorts on the way to yours. NOTHING WORSE than that, in my opinion, as you are so excited to get to the resort and check in, yet you have to drop other people off first. )

They will hold up a sign with your name on it. Finding them is as easy as walking out the airport doors and looking for your name on a sign with one of the drivers waiting outside the airport.
