I just did an exchange into the Royal Mayan. We will be staying in F120. Does anyone know how the building and room set up is. How can I tell what floor and if it might be ocean view. This will be our first Cancun trip. Who is recommended for airport transfers? Has anyone used the transfer service through the E-Plus card? Anyone info on Cancun would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a link to the resort's map http://www.royalresorts.com/mayanmap2.htm . Hopefully someone who knows can specifically answer your question about the view.

In my opinion, Royal Resorts, RR, are terrific, many seem to agree (currently Royal Mayan, RM, is in TUG'S top 10). The Royals use Thomas Moore for local travel/sight seeing tours and airport ground transport. To use them you need to reserve in advance via the RR web site or by phone. Last check, $8.50 per person each way. You can arrange a ride after arriving (but not with Thomas Moore unless rules have changed recently), but it can be a busy place and I find it worth taking care of in advance. The ground transport industry there has rules they have to follow, who can and can't pick up at the airport. On your way home you can use a cab to the airport, seems about $20 with tip. I've not used the coupon book. Once I used a different van company, they were fine, but it's an excellent opportunity to sell tours to the new arrivals and they took advantage of it.

The Yucatan Peninsula is a great playground, beaches, barrier reef, Mayan sites, theme parks, several islands, Cozumel, Mujeres, Contoy and there's Cancun with great dining and drinks. Your resort should be great too.

Thanks the map was helpful. Looks like I'm first floor.

If you have more then 4 people traveling with you, you might want to consider arranging a private van at $60 roundtrip. For the last 4 years we have used www.cancunvalet.com they also have a grocery delivery program that is very reasonable. They will not push tours on you while you are in transit, although on their web site they have tours that are the same as what is offered at Thomas More, but cheaper.

I can also recommend Cancun Valet. We used them in April and they were very good. The main thing to remember when arriving in Cancun is to quickly walk through the gauntlet of official-looking guys trying to get you to use their transportation, and go all the way outside where the people who have your reservation will be waiting for you.

I believe we did take a cab back to the airport from the hotel and it was around $20.

I know the airport routine now. We got caught in PV 2 years ago and learned our lesson. We wizzed by them last summer while in Cabo. I just booked pvt round trip shuttle through Brant's USA Transfers for $52. You pay part at pick up and the rest on the return. The last min airfare was a killer but did get non-stop. Can't beat the trade with II's flexchange.

The F building sits behind the beachfront E building and the unit you have is ground floor. There is a little water garden between the buildings. You will have little or no view of the beach from your patio as the E building will block most of the view. The good news is that you are just a short walk from the beach. Here is a floor plan and unit information: http://tonygraz0.tripod.com/minterior.html

Royal Mayan

Hi, we left there on Sep 23 and stayed in F-321A/B which is 2 floors above yours and should be the same exact room. We had both sides of a 2 bedroom lockout with the master / living / kitchen on the left (A side) and the 1 bedroom on the right (B side). The rooms were great but it is quite a way from the front with stairs going up and down all the time. Make sure you have the porters take all of your baggage each way. We picked up some groceries at Wal Mart and Costco and it was a bear to lug everything to the room.
After checking in; go to the right around the pools. Your room will be behind the big palapa at the bottom. See the other person post with the Royal Mayan map.

We luckily had some view of the water from our rooms since the 3rd floor building in front of us did not completely block our view. I don't think you will have much of a view at all except for the 'Japanese' garden fountains. You are close to the beach though . . .

If you have any specific questions on the rooms; let me know since I remember quite a bit about them . . .

I also left all the water running in our room on the 3rd floor so your room should be ready to swim in by now . . . just kidding, have fun.

I have several photos showing the views available from the different F-building units on my Photo site linked below.
The Photos that will reflect your view the closest will be the ones labled 1st floor walkway looking left and right. F120 hoever is located two units to the right of the walkway and reduce the view of the ocean looking out the left side to just about zero.
The ocean view looking out the right side is zero untill you reach the last two end units on that side.
The good news is all 2-BR units at the Royals are the same and you will be a very close walk to the beach.
I have stayed in alot of units at beach resorts in Mexico and the USA that had no ocean view and long walks to the beach. some even required a car ride to actually get to the beach.
Cancun and the Royals are great, Enjoy.

Thanks for the pics and info. It's a minor bummer with no ocean view, but how much time do you spend in your room anyway. Atleast the pool and beach are not far away. How far in advance should I make any reastaurant reservations?

Which of the tri Royals has the best pool that a 7yr old would enjoy.

I've stayed at only the Royal Caribbean, but since you can use any and all of them, I'd say try them all and then ask the 7-year old which he/she prefers. They all look equally nice.

There are only a few restaurants that require reservations. One that does is El Conquistador at the Royal Mayan but I'm not sure if that includes the early specials (Jeff H. can tell you that). I think they start taking reservations at 4 PM and are closed on Mondays.

Great link dinning is a big part of our vacation experiance. Any sudjestions for good Mexican. We prefer Mexican dishes as opose to the usual tacos and burritoes. Wife loves coconut shrimp.

My daughter was 7 when we stayed at the Mayan. Her favorites were the Mayan and the Sands by far. The Mayan has a really nice pseudo-waterfall type pool where the kids were permitted to play if they did not get carried away with it. This is the pool connected to the pooside bar and surrounds the restaurant. It was enjoyable to just lay on the waterfall part. One evening we had dinner in the restaurant, when the kids finished they jumped in the pool and we were able to relax with drinks and dessert while still with them. They also have a kid's type pool with shallower water and pillars which seemed to create a great fun play area with beach balls and squishy water toys.

She also liked the Sands pool a lot.

Be sure to check the activity calendar because there will be several things for the 7 year old to do - crafts, water races, etc. My daughter and I had fun making ceramics to bring home.

Some of the other fun things my kids (and I) loved were driving the golf carts around Isla Mujeres, swimming with the dolphins, the Sunday welcome party, and XCaret (not sure what condition that is in after the storm).

Enjoy!

I'd say the kids pool at the Mayan as well. The islander's kids pool is smallish and sits a bit behind the rest of the pool area. At the caribbean it's huge, but really just a circle. Though it has a wide arc of steps where kids seem to like to sit and play. The Mayan has the waterfalls the previous poster mentioned and seeemd to entertain kids the most. That said, they tend to do a lot of the kids activities at the Caribbean pool. Probably because it is so big.

Mine liked the Caribbean's best

Of the Tri-Royals, my kids liked the Caribbean's kids pool the best. The others are too small. My son was 7 at the time we stayed at the Tri Royals and liked the RC kids pool because it was so big. The kids pool at the Royal Sands phase II is also quite large. Of course, depending on their swimming ability, a 7 year old may prefer the regular pool although they may not be able to stand without holding on to the side.

We used Brant Boston (E-Plus) for airport transfers for our last trip in October. You don't have to purchase the card for airport transfers. It was great. They have a placard with your name and it is a private service directly to your resort. The cost is the same as cancunvalet, $65 round trip for a party over four people. Brant offers, for 1 to 3 people, a price of $52. I didn't see any lower price for less than 4 people on cancunvalet. Previously i've used Thomas Moore, but they have shared service. Their private service is much higher than brant or cancunvalet. Here is the link to Brant's site:

I went with the Brant Boston transfer for 3. Seemed the cheapest and you don't have to pay till you get there.
I like the iidea of all the activities. I know he will love the crafts as well as mom. Seems like they have lots of freebies that other places nickel and dime you for.
I've heard a few things about sea lice is this common in Cancun waters?

I haven't been to Mexico in several years, so things may be a little different now- but is the water at the Royals treated (so it's drinkable?).

Yes, it is. Not sure I'm crazy, but the first year (2003) we were in Cancun I drank the tap water at restaurants all week and had no problem, not that I'm recommending it. Royal Resort water is fine after 4 years of experience. Unless of course it's their happy hour priced margaritas that kill everything :).
(IMO, get them on the rocks, not frozen for more medicinal value)

A good choice for Mexican food is La Parrilla downtown.

Reservations are also needed for the early bird specials between 5-7 as the tables fill up quickly most days. I really miss the old days when I could just walk up or call 30 mins befor and get a table.
They were actually open on Mondays this past May when I visited.
I think it was because of the increased demand with the Captains cove closed at the time.
Saturday were the only day they didn't have the live music.
