We're looking to do something different than our Marriott units for Christmas 2014. Does anyone have a sense of how easy it is to book directly on the Royal website for a high-demand week like Christmas? We would need 3 2-bedroom units. We're aware that we have to go AI with them.

Check online at royalresorts.com to see what's available now, or call the Royals at 1-888-838-7842. It depends on how many unsold units they have (probably not many for that week), and how many owners have deposited units in their rental pool.

I just got a call from the Royal Resorts offering discounts if any of my friends or family would like to rent; if you know an owner, you could have someone check on the friends and family discount.

However, I suggest renting directly from owners; it'll be less expensive and the AI will be optional. If you do want the AI, it'll be at member discount. Try the TUG Marketplace, royalweek.com, redweek.com, omcancun.com, and myresortnetwork.com

That's my plan, rent from owners, but if I come up short of units, I may have to go directly to the resort. What kind of beds are in the second bedroom?

The second bedroom has two double beds. There are two twin Murphy beds in the living room, and the king in the master bedroom, for a total occupancy of six.

Thank you. I keep seeing differing bed types in the second bedroom advertised. Some say one Queen, others say twins or 2 doubles.

Hmmm.....well, it's possible there are different versions in the RH, but all I've ever seen at any of the Royals including the RH is two doubles. I even measured them once because I wasn't sure if they were doubles or queens!

The two beds are doubles.

I called the rental office, first time ever, this year (last week). It's the number at the top of their web page, 1-888-838-7842.
As an owner I found out I have someone appointed to me in the rental office, his name is Stefano (Italian), he was more than helpful. I now ask foir him when I call. I'd just call and ask. You know just what you want and I'd think they'd try and find them for you. They did then charge my card and I think 75% is refundable, it's for two weeks from now.

Thank you. I'll keep his name and call when we're ready to book if I don't find owner rentals.

I think he is assigned to everyone. Whenever I have had any friends call to rent he is the person they speak to!

LOL, maybe Stefano is like Joanna on the "Ask Joanna" button; I'll bet a lot of different people of both sexes are "Joanna".

The one who called me is Ian, 1-888-721-4469. He was offering discounts up to 40% off (40% off of WHAT was unclear) for my friends and family; if you can't find rentals direct from owners, you might want to check with an owner (most of us are) and see what kind of discount we might be able to get you.

I did think it odd that they assigned owners to agents (maybe I heard that wrong too) since I have never called before, but that said he was very helpful & they actually might, I don't know. I emailed a question and he called me in less than 2mn. I was only renting 3 nights, even over a Sat night, 3 weeks from now and the service was very good. He can't be the one rental person for the web site and work 24/7. Everyone can't have the same name, voices can be recognized. Too much cynicism here, sheesh. Owners don't necessarily respond to their own adds, personal experience. Great approach, try for owner rentals first with the resort as back up and soon is good.

I met Joanna last year when we did the back of the house tour at the Sands.

Yes there is, it's in the market. I recall it's not huge, but exists.

Thanks. We have never bothered with movies but this will be our first 2 week stay.
Two is so much better than one, not twice as good, more like 10 times I think. Even starting to break the two week barrier this year, (2.5, baby steps) good to have goals.

Still a working girl although hubby is retired. I hope he and I are till speaking after 2 week vacation.

I checked with my personal buddy Stefano for a friend looking for three units Christmas week, here's his answer:

"For 2013 rentals are open and prices are as follows:

The 2 bedroom 2 bathroom OCEAN VIEW Master Suite at the Royal Haciendas based on a 4 people occupancy would cost $729.30 USD per night with our REFINE Package. Extra adults would cost $135.00 USD per night (tax included).
The 2 bedroom 2 bathroom BEACH FRONT view Master Suite at the Royal Haciendas based on a 4 people occupancy would cost $779.44 USD per night with our REFINE Package. Extra adults would cost $135.00 USD per night (tax included).
Please note that prices and availability are subject to change without further notice!
If interested I can work on getting the 3 villas as close as possible to each other!"

Thank you so much!! I am planning for Christmas 2014 so I'm not ready to book yet. Did he mention what the cost was for children?

Whoops, my mistake and I even "corrected" him. Here is his 1st email for 2014. He didn't specify children prices. On their site for the AI they break it down this way:

Adults 18 years or older = $105 USD per person per day
Kids 13 - 17 years old = $75 USD per person per day
Kids 4 - 12 years old = $50 USD per person per day
Kids 0 - 3 years old = No Charge

"As per your request, I am E-mailing you back in regards to the interest of a timeshare owner in renting 3, 2 bedroom 2 bathroom Master Suites for week 51 of 2014. Rentals are currently not open for 2014, however if the they are interested in making a reservation for the 3 Master Suites now, I can give you the rates we can offer them that you can forward and if interested they can contact me directly and I will be glad to assist them with the reservation.

The 2 bedroom 2 bathroom OCEAN VIEW Master Suite at the Royal Haciendas based on a 4 people occupancy would cost $670.00 USD per night with our REFINE Package. Extra adults would cost $135.00 USD per night (tax included).
The 2 bedroom 2 bathroom BEACH FRONT view Master Suite at the Royal Haciendas based on a 4 people occupancy would cost $740.00 USD per night with our REFINE Package. Extra adults would cost $135.00 USD per night (tax included).
Please note that prices and availability are subject to change without further notice!
If more information is required or if interested in proceeding with the reservation they can get back to me by E-mail or can call the following toll free number 1-888-721-4469 ext. 64025 and just ask for Stefano."

Good to know. What is the rate for AI if I rent from an owner? I never thought I'd be going all-inclusive, but my family is getting expensive to feed in restaurants in St. Thomas on these trips now that there are more of them and they are getting older.

Glenn,

Is that with a "friends and family" (or whatever they call it) discount? I didn't get prices from Ian when he called me regarding discounts.

Suzanne,

In contrast to renting from the Royals, I found an owner rental for 2013 for $1,400, and another for $2,700 - AI not required, and if you want to do it, it'd be at the owner discount. I'm sure as the time gets closer you'll find plenty of owner rentals on the sites I listed above. You might contact people renting for 2013 and see if they'd like to rent their villa way ahead of time for 2014.

Also you could contact Earl at www.royalrentalsbyearl.com
He rents on behalf of owners; not quite sure if it's written up as renting directly from the owner (no AI) or not (AI).

Yes, I plan to go the owner rental route if I can. I'm monitoring Redweek now to see when they start showing up for next December so I can see the trend. There is one posted there now. I've already rented my Frenchman's Cove units for next December, but I guess not everyone is as anxious as I am.

In December 2014 I'll have 2 grandchildren that are drinking age - scary thought.

Not aware of any discount, none was mentioned. Here are the AI rates for owners, not much difference pp, but sound you have a large group, so $10 ea adds up. I'll defer to PJ that you'd get the owner rate in an owner's unit.

ROYAL RESORTS MEMBER RATE

Adults 18 years or older = $95 USD per person per day
Kids 13 - 17 years old = $70 USD per person per day
Kids 4 - 12 years old = $45 USD per person per day
Kids 0 - 3 years old = No Charge

Ian (post 10) called me to push a 'big discount' for my family and friends. That was before this thread, so I didn't ask him for details. I'll bet whatever he was offering is hard to come by for holiday weeks anyway!
