Seniors can get a 50% discount ($1 instead of $2 per ride) with free transfer on Oahu's THE BUS by showing their Medicare Card. This saves a trip to the bus office. They don't mention driver's license or passport as being acceptable proof. If you've mislaid your cards, as we have, your local Soc Sec office will send replacements in about 4 weeks.

This is a nice offer, but riding the city bus in Oahu is slow, hot, crowded, and slow...I wouldn't ride it unless I had no other options.

We love The Bus and have taken advantage of the senior discount for several years. They do require the Medicare card as the only acceptible form of ID, not all bus drivers even look at it if you just put the $1.00 in and say senior. Actually I've found the air condtioning too cold, especalily on the circle island route. If you avoid peak commute times they won't be as crowded. The buses run frequently on most routes. Of course you can pay to rent a car and to park it or take a taxi if you prefer.

I really like the bus for a few places that I go to-the flee market, Costco, the airport to pick up my car rental. And yes, I often freeze on the bus especially in the evenings.

We only have a little less than 2 days on Oahu. The hotel parking fee ($18) is almost as much as the car rental, then we might have to pay to park where we are going in Honolulu.

Therefore, The Bus seems a better choice.

Can someone give a little more info about the circle-the-island route? I didn't see it on the website.

I think it is a #52 or 55 bus. There are a couple of routes, we take the one that is I guess you could say is counter clockwise. We usually get off at Giovanni's shrimp truck for lunch. From Waikiki you need to connect to the circle island routes at the Ala Moana shopping center. We are owners at the Imperial and I always pick up a bus schedule at the front desk.

We like to ride the The Bus to some of the nice neighborhoods, get off and explore, look at houses and yards, then ride back to Waikiki. Makes for an entertainment activity all in itself. You might even strike up an interesting conversation with a local or a gardner.
