I believe that you can qualify for the Southwest Airlines Companion Pass if you earn 110K in frequent flyer points in a calendar year. I also believe that any points that you transfer as part of a "fly and stay" redemption of Marriott rewards points will count toward the 110K threshold. But does anyone know if I can transfer points from my Chase rewards account to my Marriott rewards account and then transfer those same points again from my Marriott account to my Southwest Airlines account and have them count towards the 110K to get the Companion Pass?

Thanks in advance,
Doug B

I did that exact scenario last year and it did work, but rules can be different now so check. I think it cost me 250,000 Marriott Reward points for 120,000 Southwest points and a Cat 1-5 certificate.

I have also done this with a Marriott Travel Package. In essence, you pay for a 7 night package with points and then additional points can be transfered at a 1:1 ratio. For example, a 7 night stay in a category 8 hotel is 240,000 points. Instead, you can spend 360,000 points and get 120,000 transfered to Southwest (eligible for companion pass). Unfortunately, direct transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards to Southwest are not Companion Pass eligible, so the points have to move to a different partner first. If you're just trying to get the companion pass, the exchange rate from Hyatt to Southwest is better than Marriott's exchange rate (unless you are doing the Marriott transfer as part of a Travel Package).

We just got the companion pass, and it's great. There are a lot of ways to do this; here's what we did:
-Applied for and received two different Chase Southwest credit cards when they were offering a 50,000 point incentive if you spent $2k in the first few months.
-Both cards were in my wife's name (you can't combine points from two or more people to count toward the $110k requirement). She took one and gave me the other. . .we both dutifully charged our normal expenses to the cards, totalling about $2500/points each. That got us up to 105,000 points.
-We then transferred enough MR points from her account to Southwest to get the additional 5,000 points. They don't transfer 1:1; I think we had to transfer about 15k MR points to get 5k SW points.
-About a month later, we received the companion pass in the mail and we're ready to roll. The earlier in the year you do this, the longer it's valid. . .it's good for until the end of the calendar year in which you earn it plus the next calendar year.
-With kids and grandchildren scattered around the Southwest system, we figure we'll probably use it five times a year. If the average cost of those flights is $250, that means we'll save $2500. . .even more if we actually use some of those 110k points to pay for flights (you can do that, too).
-When my wife's free ride ends in 2016, I'll do the same thing. If this wonderful deal still exists!
Good luck. . .lots of ways to skin this cat. A wealth of info at ThePointsGuy.com.

companion pass question re: booking and timing

Another question about the SW companion pass. If I had earned a pass at the beginning of this year (2015), I understand that it is good until 12/31/16. My question: does travel with the companion pass end on 12/31/2016 or can you book tickets with a companion pass up to 12/31/16 and actually travel in early 2017? I probably won't have enough miles to get another companion pass for 2017 and I often travel in February so I am trying to figure out the best time to pull the trigger on using miles for a companion pass. Hope this makes sense. Thanks!

You have to book and travel prior to the expiration date of the companion pass.

You can buy two one way tickets and that way the companion pass could be used on the flight in 2015 and you would have to buy both tickets for the 2016 portion of the tripl
