Our case was one where they changed, userid, PW, address and phone number. so I did not get any email telling me anything changed. I have no clue how they do this stuff w/o more questioning on Marriotts part. That being said, when we contacted Marriott to get things "reset" so it would be our information they did not ask for any proof at all. They just gave us a new pw. This concerns me.

As far as the status of the items, since i caught it quick enough they were able to recall all the merchandise that was purchased. We too had to file a police report. The policeman looked at us like we were idiots when we said we wanted to file a report on lost points. It took about 20 mins to convince him that there was any value to them to make it worth his time. We showed hm all the merchandise the hacker purchased and he got the idea.

This hacker brought 5 Apple 13" MacBookPro which retail for around 1200 each so that is 6000. And then they ordered an ipad and 4 HP mini notebooks. I guess that tells some of the value of 1 1/2 million points.

now we just wait to get our points back

Your story is exactly like ours. Except they bought multiple game systems.

I got the papers from Marriott yesterday, filled them all out last night, and now I just have to get them notarized...bother. :annoyed:

Oh, and I also need to include a copy of a valid ID (DL or passport).

As I mentioned in a above post, the officer I talked with at the Sheriff's Office was Matt Dillon, so on the Marriott paperwork I just put M. Dillon...I was afraid someone might think I was scoffing :D

There was no indication in the paper work or cover letter as to how long it would take to get our points added back to our account. But we're in no big hurry so it doesn't really matter. Will post later as to how long it took.

OK, as of this morning our points are back in our account :whoopie:

Marriott had not provided any direction as to what to do after sending in the papers, so I gave them about 10 days and then called last week (day after Christmas). A very helpful lady (Peggy) made several calls and finally located my papers on the desk of someone on vacation. She then routed them to auditing and suggested I call back (and ask for her) in a week (or so) to get a status update. Before calling this morning I decided I would check our account first...voila.

The good news is the process worked, albeit a little slow, but we weren't in need of the points during that time frame so it was more an issue of frustration than anything else.

If you haven't had the security on your account updated I would suggest you do so. When I first reported the issue and got our profile reset, we were asked to provide a 4 digit password that would be used above and beyond the password we use to get into our account. When I called and talked with Peggy last week she indeed asked for that password before she could access our account. One can only hope that future hackers won't have access to both sets of passwords :ponder:

I'm glad this has been resolved, Steve. It's terrible that MR Points going missing seems to be happening enough that we all need to be on the lookout for it, but it's great that Marriott has resolved the issue in the MR account holder's favor each and every time consistently with relatively little effort.

I wonder if we are able to proactively ask for our accounts to be protected with the extra 4-digit passcode, without being victims first? I'm going to change my password as you suggested but may ask for the extra step the next time I call in.

Thanks for telling us how this all happened. :)

Would also suggest using a password that you don't use elsewhere.

Got a report that my login information (along with a bunch of others) was stolen at another site I use.

Luckily I had used one of my old passwords, but made me think about how many times I use the same login and password at sites.

With the number of security attacks for both profit and politics, there is a chance that one of your logins get stolen someday.
Once they have them, they usually brute force try multiple sites to see if they can get them.

It is to have a single password and use multipl places.
Such As use "password" as you password.
The add a phrase such as The One For ... (TOF..)
Marriott Rewards : passwordTOFMR
American Advantage : passwordTOFAA
Delta Sky Miles : passwordTOFSM
etc....

Easy to remember, hard to hack.

Well, it looks like I am the newest member of the club. I am missing 286,000 points, which were also used for Travel Service Awards on Sky Mall (probably gift cards).

Marriott Rewards has been very unhelpful, and after several runarounds, I am still waiting for my affidavit forms. They refuse to even discuss it further unless I get a police report, which I think is ridiculous. They are taking NO accountability for allowing someone (most likely an insider) to go into my account, change all the info and drain the account. And, they apparently would rather have the customers inconvenienced than look at their own issues.

When I told them that I wanted assurances that the points remaining wouldn't be taken, they told me to change my password!

The police officer I dealt with needed a little education, but certainly understood the concept. He has seen plenty of these kinds of things before, but said that we would most likely be worrying about it more than Marriott!

I have heard from Marriott that my points were stolen and cashed in for Nordstrom gift cards. Should be easy to track!

Anyone else have a recent issue? Mine were taken on 12/14. Strangely enough, the person never changed the contact information back again after receiving the cards (they were sent to that address)...
