Just came across this quote in the FAQ.

["Dave M & dll1234 04-21-05

Not quite. Marriott Rewards points earned by turning in the use of a Marriott week in exchange for points cannot be used for timeshare stays. Points earned in other ways (purchase incentives, stays at Marriott hotels, Marriott Visa purchases, etc.) may be used for awards for Marriott timeshare stays."]

This is NOT true. We've exchanged into MOC AND Ko'Olina using reward points we received from turning in our DSV. Once in 2004 and once just last month! (Jan. 06)

Granted it's not easy to find availability. Both times I felt like a lottery winner!

We are trading for points this year and I found this on the MVCI reservations page.

"Reservations
Please Note
Please note that Marriott Rewards points acquired through exchange of an interest or share at a Marriott Vacation Club International resort may not be used to request a Reward Certificate for accommodations at a Marriott Vacation Club International resort."

If you were able to use MR points you were either lucky that it wasn't caught or you had enough points earned from other sources.

Sadly, it is still true.

Marriott has some glitches in their computer system, but their intent is to separate the sources of points in your account - in their records - and prohibit you from using points obtained through trading in the use of your week to obtain awards for timeshare stays. However, points obtained as an incentive for purchasing a week, as well as those sources discussed in the quote, can be used for timeshare stays.

Here's the rule, from the MVCI website Q&A:
Q: Can I use my Marriott Rewards® points to stay at another Marriott Vacation Club® International resort?

A: Please note that Marriott Rewards® points acquired through exchange of an interest or share at a Marriott Vacation Club resort may not be used to request a Reward Certificate for accommodations at a Marriott Vacation Club resort.

When I talked to an advisor about it, he confirmed this was the rule but said their system doesn't really have a good way of separating out the source of the points. So they do it on the honor system, although I'm sure if they did a thorough audit, they could figure it out. This was about a year and a half ago.

On a couple of times in the past I asked the MAR rep how many points of my total could be used for timeshare reservations and each time they easily told me the number of points I had that could be used that way...so they must have better control than some of the posts here indicate.

I wonder if they came up with this "rule" after we made our first purchase, 10 years ago. Because our sales rep. is the one who told us we could trade for Marriott Villas.
