Leave tomorrow for the PGA tournament at Pebble Beach. Anyone suggest any good restaurants in Monterey? We'll have a whole crew of young adults with us, so don't want to break the bank as I'm sure they'll expect Mom and Dad to pay! Just a last minute thought.

My favorites are in Carmel and Pacific Grove:

Carmel:
Katy's Place (breakfast)
Tutto Mundo Trattoria
Little Napoli
Hog's Breath (do NOT eat here, only go for drinks. Fun since it used to belong to Clint Eastwood)

Pacific Grove:
Red House (breakfast/lunch)
Toasties (breakfast)
Fandango
Passionfish
Vito's

Do NOT eat at Lattitudes on Lover's Point. We went there for dinner one night as it was recommended by the hotel where we were staying. We were virtually ignored and ended up leaving. (Plus the menu wasn't very impressive). Too bad as the location is very nice. We ended up going to a wonderful family run Italian restaurant (Vito's).

One of my favorite restaurants in Monterey is The Fish Hopper

http://www.fishhopper.com/

It is located next to the Monterey aquarium.....the best calm chowder in the world It is next to Bubba Gumps (I do not reccomend Bubba Gumps for dinner)

Fandango was Fantastic

We ate at Fandango's many moons ago and at that time the food was excellent. Not sure now because it was years ago but if it was me I'd try it again.

One of the best dining experiences I ever had was at the Pacifics Edge restaurant in the Hyatt Highlands Inn in Carmel. It has a wonderful tasting menu and we had a windowside table overlooking the ocean at sunset. It was a joy to behold watching the crashing waves as the sun set and when it was finally dark you could see the bats flying around - a real spectacle. The food was superb!! I can't wait to go back - pricey but well worth the experience. Another outstanding dining experience is Fresh Cream in Monterey - also expensive but excellent. Montrio in Monterey is also very good. I thought the Sardine Factory was good but overpriced. Also, the Stillwater restaurant at Pebble Beach has one of the finest brunches I have ever enjoyed and on a nice day its great to sit outside overlooking the golf course - its a "don't miss"!

Sorry - I just noticed you didn't want to "break the bank" so my suggestions are best reserved for another trip when you're not with the kids!!

I agree about Pacific Edge. Dh and I would go there when we'd go to Carmel on our own. We also loved a restaurant called Raffaelo's in Carmel. Unfortunately that one is gone. :bawl:

As a local, for breakfast we are regular customers of First Awakening, across from the Aquarium in the American Tin Cannery Outlet building. The Chart House on Cannery Row is quite good and for teppan yaki there is Benihana's near the end of Fisherman's Wharf. The Trailside Cafe on the bike/walk trail above Cannery Row is nice for breakfast, especially when the weather is nice and you can sit outside. Unfortunately, the weather predictions for the AT&T are not very promising - rain expected every day (as is usually the case at the AT&T).

Thanks everyone. Sounds like not enough days for too many restaurants. Yes, I understand the weather is supposed to be dreadful for the ATT, but our son is playing in it and I guess as parentals we need to show up! A bad day on the golf course (even watching) is still better than a day at work! Thanks again, all!

Monterey

We usually have an early dinner at the Chart House when we drive over for the day. Prices are reasonable and the food is really good.

Had the scallops in a sugar cane sauce...delicious

Another local here. All the suggestions are good, though many are pricey. Agree with the comment on Sardine Factory -- ever since I came here in 1980, Sardine Factory has been known among the locals as a place that's good, but way overpriced. For good seafood at a reasonable price, try http://www.fishwife.com/

Sorry about the weather. Known locally as "Crosby weather", since the AT&T was originally the Crosby. It seems to *always* pour cats & dogs for the Crosby, I mean the AT&T. Well, actually the last two years were both nice; so we're overdue for "Crosby weather". Sorry about that, but we badly need the rain here.

Any suggestions for hotels in the area?

We prefer to stay in Carmel. One reason is because it's such a charming little town, and if you are staying there you're guaranteed a place to park. :p We generally stay at one of the Inns By the Sea: http://www.innsbythesea.com/ , either the Dolphin Inn or the Svensgaard. Neither are terribly fancy, but the location is good. I signed up for email notification of their specials, which they run at various times during the year. We've also stayed at the Monteverde Inn, again nothing fancy, but good location in Carmel. We stayed at a Best Western in Pacific Grove last summer as there was nothing available in Carmel at the time we went. It was fun to stay in another area, but we had to take the car everywhere we went.

We've stayed in both Carmel and Monterey before. I'll look into those places. Thank you for the suggestion.
