resale points vs direct purchase for extras

my parents are owners for several years and bought all of there points directly from wyndham. i am in the process of a resale purchace of my first 308000 points. they were just at atlantic city and asked what is the difference between resale and direct purchase. i know that i can't get vip. but wyndham told them i can't use my point for cruises and other stuff. didn't have the time to get into detail with them.

is this true or is it more salesman bull crap?

You cannot use them for VIP. They generally are not available for Plus Partners (cruises and stuff) unless you pay a fee to Wyndham and/or have a retail purchase as well.

Consensus is that Plus Partners is of dubious value, except perhaps RCI Nightly Stays in certain situations.

The use of points for cruises, airfare or RCI "nightly" stays is reffering to the Plus Partners program. This is included when purchasing retail but not resale. You can enroll in the program for about $3000.

That being said, I have never heard anyone say that the point usage for anything other than timeshare stays are very cost effective. I priced airline tickets once, and figuring in my maintenance fee costs, the tickets would have cost me about twice what I could pay with cash. :annoyed:

The general feeling is that for most TS systems the price difference between buying from the developer vs buying resale is by buying from the developer you'll pay 2 - 4 times the amount you pay resale. ( savings of 50-75% )

BUT with Wyndham you'll likely pay 10 - 20 times more!! (A saving of 90% - 95%) !! Can there really be any extra that the developer offers which is worth paying 10 times more for the points??

so if you want to use it for cruises/airfare just tranfer pts to your parents...

If you want the plus partners stuff or anything you can'g get, transfer the points for free to your parents and have them use your points to book. Once the points are theirs its there for them to use it as they usually would.
