Need to rent a car for two weeks in Orlando next Christmas and just wondering if anyone has ideas on how to get the best deal, how far to book in advance etc. Thanks

Check often. That is the most important criteria. I always check Orbitz for any really great deals. Once, we got a mid-size from Enterprise for $95 per week, including all fees.

But, I mostly use Costco codes and generally book with Alamo. Their rental cars are right across from the airport. No waiting for shuttles, no loading bags into a shuttle and off again. I just like the convenience of going directly to pick up the car.

Go to www.mousesavers.com and check for other codes that might help.

check alamo
I've always found them the cheapest -look for Alamo codes on mousesavers.com

WOW!! And thanks...

My wife and I are going to be in Florida in late April, picking up a rental car at Orlando airport for 1 week (while we stay at Marriott Grande Vista) and then dropping it off at Tampa airport before we board a Caribbean cruise. I had reserved an intermediate size car from Dollar a few months ago for a total of $277.

I tried some of the Dollar codes I found at mousesavers.com. I was able to get my rate down to a total charge of $146. That's just a huge savings. It's 47% less.

(Now, could you guys please post the website that has the codes that will help me save a few $$$ on my Federal taxes. I could really make good use of a 47% tax reduction.)

And don't forget to negotiate when you pick up your vehicle. Clerks can give free upgrades to nicer vehicles if they are on the lot.

The Smart Money magazine says that the best deals will be from the small car rental firms. They recommend using this site to find the small company rates: http://carrentalexpress.com

It's a world wide sale and would have saved us money in Ireland, but we'd already put down a deposit that we couldn't get back.

I alway's use Priceline, I name my own price - Orlando I get a full-size for $16.00/day. You may need to try a few times (have to wait 3 days) but could be a big money saver.

Is that 16/day all-in, or does that exclude taxes?

Generally the bid price does NOT include taxes and other fees.

For us it's always been priceline for car rentals and hotels. For the cars you usually get an entity 10 minutes closer to the airport (especially in Orlando where Alamo and Enterprise are several minutes east-- which is away from the parks and most of the resorts.)

When bidding for hotels I find 3 stars are great (sheraton, marriott, radisson, etc).

Thanks for the other websites (biddingfortravel and the car rental one, they're in my favorites now).
