Hi. We will be flying in from San Diego next March and staying at Holiday Inn Desert Club. There will be 2 couples staying there. Do you think it is necessary to rent a car for the week or can you get around using the shuttles and taxis? What do most people do? Thanks

I had to re-read your post. It looked like you had said you were going into San Diego and then staying at the Holiday Inn Desert Club which is in Vegas! :D

But now that I figured it out  - I almost always recommend people rent a car in Vegas. It's an easy town to drive around at. Valet at all hotels is free (just a tip to the valet attendant), the city is far more than Las Vegas Blvd - get out explore, see the sights, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, the burro's at Blue Diamond, Mt Charleston etc...

If you rent a car as well you will see that our fair town has a lovely collection of various neighborhoods and local restaurants, casino's and attractions.

I can't stress this enough...Las Vegas is way more than just the Strip! :)

We're always glad we have a car in Las Vegas; those casinos aren't really walking distance from each other. It looks like it on the map, but you'll be amazed at how much space each of them takes up. To make your driving easier, purchase a copy of The Un-Official Guide to Las Vegas--it has the back route to use between casinos, like the cabs use, in order to avoid being stuck in traffic on the Strip. With a car, you'll feel free to explore some of the rest of Las Vegas, too.

The city blocks are one square mile. So yes, on a map it may look close together, but on a hot day it can be quite a hike.

I don't normally recommend driving from casino to casino, since it can be a hassel in traffic and the crowds. Just park in a central one such as the Flamingo and walk around from there since it's a central location.

Your TS is quite close to the strip, within easy walking distance. Having said that, I would strongly recommend renting a car. There are lots of wonderful sights outside LV. Red Rock Canyon, in my opinion, is a must-see. Valley of fire is beautiful. Take a drive down to the southern end of town and check out the South Point Casino and M.

Living relatively close by, we frequently drive however, IMHO driving is pretty much a waste of time if you are not going off strip (or are in relatively good physical shape). By the time you drive to the casino self-park, cruise up and down four stories, find an elevator and then walk to where it is - well, I'm pretty exhausted. I do recommend driving to a central location and then using foot power - or you might divide the strip in half. Depending on where you are staying; even taking the bus down to Fremont can be a challenge and the monorail only runs the south strip (and it's a pretty good hike to the Strip, too). When we drive we use Koval pretty regularly instead of LVB. Especially when we go to the $7.95 (?) steak night at that little brewery on Koval behind the MGM (why can't I remember the name-been too long, I guess).

Thanks everyone. Sounds like the car is the way to go. This will be our 1st time in Vegas. Looks like there is lots to see besides casinos!

I am glad you decided to get a car.

There are lots of us here (about 2 million people total in metro LV) who hardly if ever go to the Strip. :)
