Rental car in Iceland?

Has anyone had a good experience in renting a car in Iceland from any particular company? I see a lot of really bad reviews.

Hertz

Rented from Hertz last December. Probably not the cheapest, but picked up a Rav 4 at the airport (right outside arrivals). Was quick and easy. Did it all online through the Hertz site. Car was fairly new and handled the roads and weather just fine.

Caveat for Iceland Car Rental

Be sure to take dated before AND after photos of your rental vehicle! Use a flashlight to spot dings inside and outside the windshield.

We rented from SIXT and upon returning the SUV preflight, lo & behold the agent found a starburst on the windshield that she 'found' from inside thanks to her handy flashlight.

The on-the-spot charge to us was 750 euro! I believe we were scammed by SIXT but had no evidence to dispute the charge. Luckily VISA reimbursed us.

Iceland might be a good place to add all that extra coverage rental agencies try to sell you at check-in. We didn't because of credit card coverage which came through in this case.

Rented for Budget/Avis last week pretty painless BUT they do really push the comprehensive coverage due to wind damage (Iceland is really windy) which isn't covered by collision. $15/day

Also had a tiny scratch on bumper which looked old they let it pass BUT asked if I had taken pictures of the car when we picked it up

Driving in Iceland was easy, roads generally good drive on the right like the USA

BE AWARE car rental and hotel are a bit pricey BUT the food is at least 3 times what food in the US cost. Dinner with lamb and a bowl of soup $80
Pub food Beer and shepherds pie $45 16oz coke at grocery store $4 Price at the airport duty free is at least 1/2 cheaper glad we bought two bottles of wine there.

On our first night, all decent (TA ranked) restaurants were fully booked.
Luckily, we found a "Hamburger Factory" around the corner. Reasonable.

In August, we rented a car for a day from Reykjavik Rent a Car, telephone 354-569-3300, or info@reykjavikrentacar. Address Knarrarvogur, Space 2, 104 Reykjavik (right off 41). It was $134 for 24 hours. It would have been less if rented longer. We were four adults on a cruise ship and had made our own reservations to spend the afternoon and part of the evening at The Blue Lagoon. Didn't realize that The Blue Lagoon is 45 minutes drive from Reykjavik. It was going to cost us $250 for a cab and one coach transfer company wanted $110 per person. We didn't want to take a bus. The rental company sent a shuttle to pick us up around noon and we used the car the next morning to ride around Reykajavik, park and walk downtown. Then we returned it and the shuttle took us back to the ship. It was easy to drive there.

Our dinner menu had three prices. All appetizers were $26. All entrees were $59. All desserts were $24. A glass of wine was $26. We just had entrees and tap water. Delicious! But whew! I saw other menus at restaurants where each item in a category was the same price. Everything was extremely expensive. Tourist t-shirts were $36. Gas was in the neighborhood of $10 a gallon.
