More than 40 spring breakers who ignored public health advice test positive for coronavirus.

Richard
I have several concern how many other sspring breakers that have travel to Mexico and return home by other commercial planes, automobiles or buses have tested positive for the coronavirus?

How many individuals have these young spring breakers been in contact with in the past two (2) weeks? Shame on you Texas students and other spring breakers.

Russia is interesting with such low numbers, could be several factors.

- limited travel to/from the rest of the world
- limited reporting/strict controls on news media

This BBC story indicates Putin has implemented stay at home now.

I like the animated graph of case counts over time, shows how quickly US passed all other countries in March.

I loved the response of the Texas House Speaker. Mirrors my sentiments exactly. May be a harsh sentiment, but if any of them need medical attention, make them go to the back of the line!

Can an Old Vaccine Stop the New Coronavirus?
A tuberculosis vaccine invented a century ago is cheap and safe, and seems to bolster the body’s immune system.

A vaccine that was developed a hundred years ago to fight the tuberculosis scourge in Europe is now being tested against the coronavirus by scientists eager to find a quick way to protect health care workers, among others.

The Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccine is still widely used in the developing world, where scientists have found that it does more than prevent TB. The vaccine prevents infant deaths from a variety of causes, and sharply reduces the incidence of respiratory infections.

The vaccine seems to “train” the immune system to recognize and respond to a variety of infections, including viruses, bacteria and parasites, experts say. There is little evidence yet that the vaccine will blunt infection with the coronavirus, but a series of clinical trials may answer the question in just months....

Maybe we should not blame the kids for bad decisions. If travel was still allowed by the government, then the government is to blame. The government should have stopped flights to Mexico for non essential travel. If things are allowed, people will do it. Look at how many mature adults are not staying home. Also their parents could have stopped them. Remember that up until age 25, the brain is still developing. These kids seem irresponsible but that is normal at that age. Who thinks about long term consequences in the 18-21 age group?

There is another story circulating in The NY Times and elsewhere about how many people traveled to China after the government knew about Covid-19. The headline is:
430,000 People Have Traveled From China to U.S. Since Coronavirus Surfaced
There were 1,300 direct flights to 17 cities before President Trump’s travel restrictions. Since then, nearly 40,000 Americans and other authorized travelers have made the trip, some this past week and many with spotty screening.

To borrow another phrase from Shakespeare, this time from "Romeo and Juliette": "A plague on both (their) houses!"

Maybe it's time we stopped making excuses for young people for making poor decisions. Lots of young people seemed to be able to use some common sense and arrive at more considered actions. Making excuses for the minority just enables them to continue being irresponsible. Three-quarters of a century ago, people of the same age were dying on the fields of Europe and in the jungles of Asia.

I would apply the same logic to any adult that decided their travel plans were more important. This self-entitlement needs to stop!

Beaumont has 1,500 workers with coronavirus symptoms, including 500 nurses

Richard

And some of those nurses and health care workers may be amongst the thousands of Canadians that cross the border every day between Windsor and Detroit as essential workers. They risk their lives to take up their positions in the front lines at those Detroit area hospitals. My respect and kudos to them and all the other front-line people on both sides of the border for being brave and caring professionals. Together we are stronger.

We all know how best we can show our respect by not putting them in any more danger. The Premier (for Americans, think of Governor) of the Province of Nova Scotia has gone viral in Canada with his catchy phrase for practicing physical distancing: "Stay the Blazes Home."
