A recent study from the United Kingdom found certain types of alcohol could impact how susceptible a person is to getting COVID-19. ;)

The study, published in the scientific journal Frontiers on Jan. 3, found that people who drank red wine, white wine and champagne were less likely to get COVID-19 while those who consumed beer, cider, and spirits in heavy amounts were more likely to become sick.

This study included 473,957 subjects, 16,559 of whom tested positive for COVID-19, the study authors wrote.

Geez (tongue in cheek), I wish you had posted this story sometime during the late afternoon rather than at eight in the morning. Then I could have read the link while sitting enjoying a nice glass of red wine while patting myself on the back.

More seriously (and this is in no way a criticism for MdRef having posted this story), I am skeptical about whether red wine has any influence on the chances of getting infected with Covid. There is an oft repeated slogan "Correlation does not mean causation." The idea is that just because two factors go together, that does not mean one causes the other. (Again, tongue in cheek, perhaps the story has it backwards. Those of us who have not gotten Covid like to celebrate by having a glass of red wine.)

So, why the correlation? My bet is that as a general class (and not true for every individual) red wine drinkers are wealthier, tend to live a healthier life style, and in general are more cautious than, say, beer drinkers. (Again, I am not saying this is true for every red wine drinker or every beer drinker.) My bet is that it is one or more of these other factors that lead to the correlation rather than the impact of red wine itself.

Thanks for posting. Fun story.

Red wine has so many other heath benefits when consumed in moderation. Roger, please keep in mind that it's late afternoon somewhere. ;)

Interesting study, though i kind of doubt that my red wine consumption will make any meaningful change to my risk level. Though I certainly won't complain if it does help..

Not sure if the study included two buck chuck. Which is no longer 2 bucks.

Yep, and it’s organic.

But let us not forget about Gallo Hearty Burgundy!! Another classic red wine.

Funny. I‘m drinking a glass of red as I read this. Doctor‘s suggestion of course to drink one glass per day. I rarely drank red wine before he said it could help raise my good cholesterol level. I rather enjoy it too.

Best regards.

Mike

On a serious note, I've always thought that 1-2 glasses of red wine with dinner each night really help to relax after a stressful day of work. I typically work out prior to dinner, so the two combined have helped me maintain good cholesterol and low blood pressure through a high-pressure corporate career (and having two daughters). I also think it is healthier than drinking soft drinks or some other alternative beverages. I wouldn't be surprised if it also enhances immune system.

What about rum and tequila ? I'd volunteer for that study.
.

Can we claim the cost of red wine as a medical expense when we do our taxes?

Now there is business opportunity. Rebottle some red wine. Get a test group together. Don't worry about double blinds, placebos, etc, etc. . Publish results that show the group had a lower infection rate drinking YOUR wine. Offer wine for sale. 375ML bottles for just $24.99 plus shipping. Market through radio hosts for 15% of net. No prescription needed, but you age has to be verified.

Tell the naysayers they are puppets, losers, not patriots and just generally ignore them.

Why do you target only Radio hosts? do you hate/despise radio as an information medium? And television, print and internet sources are reliable/factual bastons of truth? Give me a break!

I target rile'em radio hosts because they seem to have the most influence on the spread of misinformation.

Are you really sure this is the direction you would like to take this discussion to?

"Naysayers" is, at least in my opinion, fair game. Nothing offensive I believe but, for others well, that's up to them. As for "puppets, losers, not patriots" well, there's an area on the human body which I think you can put that comment. Quite firmly as a matter of fact. Take a guess. I've noticed when you begin to wane in making a point you revert to such behavior. Has this always been an issue with you? We're all adults here, well most of us are anyway I've found out. Can we forgo with the elementary, childish name calling?
