Red Tide

Heading to Clearwater Beach in a week and just heard horror stories about the red tide affecting the Gulf Coast. I heard people are having problems breathing and feel burning in their throats and eyes. Anyone there now with insight? Is it bad enough to warrant changing plans?

Staying right across from the beach so I am worried that it won't be possible to even sit by the pool.

You will be fine sitting by the pool....its pretty much a yearly event on Floridas West Coast

Our DS & DiL are heading down to Tampa next week to look for a house (job transfer) and are concerned about Red Tide and the breathing problems it might cause. My friend is currently in Venice Florida and they have signs posted at the beach about Red Tide. The signs read do not go into the water and she said people were sitting on the beach coughing.

Yep. It used to just be in September and October, but now is growing into a year-round problem. FL Gov't needs to step in to curb excessive amounts of Lake Okeechobee fertilizer and waste pollution from the surrounding agricultural areas.

Red tide spreads easily via ocean currents and through discharges from polluted waterways, especially Lake Okeechobee.

Red tide in Florida often erupts into huge algae blooms when conditions are favorable, especially when the algae is fueled by water pollution.

Human-generated pollution fuels red tide and make red tide grow rapidly. Common sources of pollution include

• Industrial pollution
• Human Sewage
• Agricultural sewage
• Agricultural fertilizer
• And other sources

I’m at Clearwater beach right now. We got in on Tuesday and noticed a very slight smell, and water clarity didn’t look great.

It seems completely normal now and I believe red tide levels are testing as low or maybe even not detected.

I was worried as well, but it hasn’t affected our trip at all.

I live on Marco Island and my poor dog, between the pollen and the red tide, is coughing, wheezing and sneezing a bunch. It was worse yesterday, but still not great today. Low levels on Marco.
