Recommendations for San Diego area beachfront resorts

I'm looking for resorts or timeshares around San Diego (and as far north as Carlsbad) that are beachfront (i.e. walk to beach). I would love to stay at the Del but can't justify in this economy. I'll be there with my two little ones so suites/villas is a plus.

Well, the Coronado Beach Resort is right across the street from the Hotel Del, and the beaches in California are public.
 
Second the vote for Coronado Beach Resort. Small but comfortable place, clean, well run, great location, and the view of the Del is huge. Just cross the street and you're there. They even have beach gear you can use.

Coronado Beach Resort also has some privileges at the Loew's resort down the strand a bit. They used to have them with the Del, but no longer.
 
I own at Carlsbad Inn and have stayed at the Coronado Beach Resort and would recommend either. They are both very nice. The Coronado Beach resort does not have a pool but they have an arrangement to use the facilities at Lowes which is a few miles down the road but is really nice. We love Carlsbad Inn and to just walk across a very small street to the beach. Also Fish House Vera Cruz is within walking distance for dinner. I WANNA GO
 
We live in Carlsbad and have some suggestions not mentioned: If you mean RIGHT on the sand -- Southern California Beach Club in Oceanside (a little more north than you asked) has sand right out your door. It isn't as nice as the others. Also in Oceanside is Wyndham's latest and across from the beach.

In Del Mar is Wavecrest -- again not on the sand, but close to the beach. Del Mar is very affluent. In Carlsbad and not mentioned is Tamarack Beach Resort which is right across the street from the ocean. This may be my recommendation because the pool area is in the center of the complex and your children basically are 'fenced' in for safety. Units are roomy.

Coronado Beach Resort is great, but difficult to trade into.

We've always had a car when we've visited San Diego, and to really enjoy the area I'd suggest renting one. I've done very well getting great prices through Priceline. I "think" I remember the Coronado Beach Resort having some planned trips to various places, I don't remember a shuttle service though.
 
No free shuttles that I know of -- gas prices too high, freeway traffic can be too heavy. Cloud Nine shuttle service is a long time company that charges but does pick you up at airport.

When I was there last year they were offering shopping/sightseeing trips up the coast. They were all-day affairs, as I recall, and were expensive enough, we did't use the,. I don't remember a shuttle or bus to the Zoo or Sea World.

Given the way San Diego is laid out, a rental car makes a lot of sense. I'd suggest renting a car and having transportation when you need it.

You could use public transportation (train,trolley,bus) to get to Balboa park which will keep you busy for 2-3 days. Zoo, Fleet Science center, I-Max, car and airplane museums, various art museums and gardens, artist village and more, but San Diego, while fairly compact, is better laid out for cars than public trans. I'd recommend a rental car. When your plans come together, a few searches here in TUG will have you more things to do and places to eat than you can get done in a month.

If you REALLY don't want to drive, Coronado Beach Resort does have some outings to Lowes, and they have loaner bicycles. There are paid (discounted) tours like the hop-on hop-off bus. The city bus stops right outside CBR. Enjoy!

While it is possible to live without a car in Southern California, it does make life harder. This as you probably know is a car culture, and to truly see and enjoy much of what the area has to offer, a car is important, though as others have noted, not vital...but to me still important.
 
When we've stayed in San Diego a car has been vital (well yeah I'm a born and raised Californian ;) ) because we liked to take drives along the coast. :whoopie:

I agree Luanne, to me it is vital, but I know others would almost rather swallow nails or walk on broken glass, than drive on our freeways down here!:eek:

But you are right a drive along the coast is a great experience and without the car, you just can't do that.

No, no not on the freeway! Really, if you fly into the airport in San Diego there's not a lot of freeway driving you need to do. And if you avoid driving at certain times of the day the roads (even the freeway) are not bad. But yes, I was talking about a true ride up the coast on the coast highway, through all the little towns along the way. :D
 
I own at Carlsbad Seapointe and Grand Pacific Palisades Resorts In Carlsbad. The beach is located right across the street from Carlsbad Seapointe Resort, however no shuttle service.

Grand Pacific Palisades is @ 1.5 miles from the beach. They have a shuttle van, but I believe its for transportation to/from airport. Car rental is available onsite. Legoland and the Sea Life Aquarium are located next to the resort.

Villa L'Auberge in Del Mar is another great place to stay within walking distance to beach.
