Recommendations for a good vacuum cleaner for berber carpeting

Most of the flooring in our house is tile, but the bedrooms have berber carpeting and we have an area rug in the living area. Can anyone suggest a good vacuum cleaner for the carpeted areas?

In our previous house we had a built-in Electrolux vacuum system for many years and I've since been unable to find a vacuum cleaner that works as well as that built-in system did.

Any suggestions?
 
Love my Sears

With a completely carpeted house (including kitchen and baths) and MANY dogs with LOTS of hair, the vacuum cleaner companies should be paying me to be a tester!

Earlier this year I had to replace my vacuum cleaner and am absolutely in love with my Sears Progressive Direct Drive upright.

I'll second that on the Sears Progressive upright. There are a couple of different models, I have the one with the hepa bag and hepa filter - it's blue-grey color and QUIET! Before buying it, I'd burned out two vaccums in two years in my house (mostly carpet floors with some regular carpet and some berber....for the berber you just use the gentle button instead of the carpet button).
 
I love my Dyson...

I have had it now for 5 years and its the best vacuum cleaner I have ever invested in. Its very flexible, vacuums hardwood floors also and is easy to take apart.

After discovering that this model was the #1 rated vacuum with Consumer Reports, we went to Sears today to buy one. They are on sale today for $229, down from the regular price of $369!

Looking forward to vacuuming this afternoon!
