Really want to sell my Vail timeshare. Need advice

What's the best way to sell, avoid a scam, get out?

Not to be flippant about your post, but there are two Sticky-Notes at the top of this forum entitled, "How To Sell..." or the other one, "Frequently Mentioned Websites" which, I daresay, are likely to answer most of your questions. Read them first.

Question Re-phrased

OK, maybe I'm looking for advice from a real person who has SUCCESSFULLY sold his or her timeshare recently, and if so, by what means?

Do you still owe on it? Have you researched sale prices to know what you can realistically expect - not what the developer gets or what you think its worth?

There are far too many places that want hiundreds or even thousands of dollars upfront to "sell" your week but they take the money and you never see a sale.

In this economy and with all the timeshares for sale you are unlikely to get much for your week no matter where it is or what week it is (prime prime time/seasonal perfection excluded but those are few and far between).

Eagle Point sells on their website. I think that is the best way to sell a week there. Is it a ski week, summer?

You live in Frisco! Lovely area, and that is where our Val Chatelle is located. We love the town, the unit, the area. Summit County is gorgeous all times of the year.

I would suggest you consider www.myresortnetwork.com or redweek.com or listing your timeshare on eBay. If you price it right, it should sell as Vail is a very nice location.

You have to be realistic, however. The economy is not good, and the timeshares that are selling are going for very low prices. I recently sold one of my timeshares on eBay...so it is possible...but you need to be careful not to overprice it. I'd start with an opening bid of $1 and have either no reserve or a very low reserve price.

It's my opinion that you should not pay a large upfront "advertising", "marketing", "appraisal" or any other kind of fee to someone who wants to help you sell your timeshare. Some of these may be legitimate companies, but it's questionable that they will be able to sell your timeshare for anywhere near enough to cover their fee and also provide you with some profit. Typically, these companies overprice the listings (basically telling the seller the property is worth what they want to hear) and then the timeshare doesn't sell.

Also, if someone calls or emails out of the blue and offers to buy your timeshare...and it sounds to good to be true...it almost certainly is fraudulent. There are a lot of scams going around. Don't fall for them.

One easy way to tell a scam is if the person is eager to buy your timeshare without asking any questions about it. Real people don't do that. They ask questions. Also, if an email contains broken English, that's a red flag. Finally, if someone wants to send you a cashier's check or wire for more than the amount of the timeshare and then have you refund the difference, that is a definite scam. Run the other way!

Hope this info. helps.

Steve

We have a Winter Week, with a 2:1 exchange incentive when Interval Gold dues are paid. We own it, no loan, and dues are paid up. Also, the property is undergoing a massive remodel, with all units getting new kitchens, granite, stainless, etc., in order to keep up with the Vail benchmark. It's really nice, but husband has been laid off (Intrawest) and no new job prospects as of yet. Paring down.

Thanks for all the good comments; I think we will list w/EastWest Resorts in Vail... let me know if you need help in Summit County... have lived here 30 years!

If "get out" are the operative words, advertise on TUG with a "below realistic" asking price. I did this recently; got two responses; and moved my Week within 14 days. It was a great deal for the Purchaser, but that is how you sell quickly!!

Consider holding and renting on redweek

It is unlikely that your week will sell on ebay for over 2,000 and it might sell for a lot less. YOu can search ebay for eagle point and see closed sales. A two bedroom winter Falcon Point (EOY) went for a little over 1100 plus closing costs this last week. Have you considered reserving a great winter week for the next two years and renting it? You might make two to three hundred dollars a year over your maintenance fees or just break even with your fees but it would pay the maintenance fees until your family gets back on its financial feet. Funtime

Deposit and rent...

Ya, that's what we've been doing. Prior to today, my impression was that we might get $7-9K for the unit, but now believe that it would be wise to wait, unless we are able to sell for more. Heck... we may just find time to use the D*&^(*^ ed thing!

Thanks very much. PS

I sold for dirt cheap also...with success...

I sold via redweek.com for rock bottom...also list on TUG or bidshares.com and the other sites.

The most recent sale (end of May) on eBay for a 2 br ski week (owned by a Tugger too) was about $3200. It was a very competitive auction with many bidders. If I recall correctly, the next previous auction for a 2 br ski week went for even more.

2 br ski weeks at Eagle Point are not that common on eBay (I've been watching for about 2 years). I know that others on this board have found them for bargain prices (less than $2000), but I haven't seen them. I believe you would get above $3000 on eBay, but remember that the most successful auctions in the end are those held without a reserve. I would be very uncomfortable doing this, but it seems to be the best strategy.

I believe the recommendation to continue to rent (unless you absolutely must sell) is the most sound.

If you don't want to sell yourself, as mentioned by rickandcindy, there are active resales on the resorts website. I strongly believe that if you went this route and priced lower than everyone else there, you would be able to sell it quickly.
