How Important is Electric Car Battery Range? First-Time Buyers Take Note.

IF the EV you are purchasing is your only car, then yes. If you are are travelling across the country, then bigger is better. You have to have range to make up for the time it takes to fully charge the battery.

Tesla tried to amp up its Supercharger network during the holiday rush, but there were still long waiting lines in some places. When it takes 10's of minutes to fast charge your car there is going to be congestion. Given the current demand of Superchargers, there are limitations on how many you can put in a given area due to the power grid (yes, I know they use batteries to smooth out the current demand). Tesla attempted to solve this with mobile Superchargers on trucks with massive battery packs.

We are on the verge of a battery breakthrough with the solid state battery which will up the power density and fast charge capability. I foresee ranges of 700 miles plus in the near future. With that kind of range, you could drive all day on a single charge.

Right now, I'm happy with my EV city car and my dino fueled long distance car. I'm not that much of a zealot ... yet.

I'm happy with my 'electric vehicle' bicycle but I'll keep my dino fueled car for now
