What do you think of exchanging here in May? Will there still be snow? I'm not a big snow fan. I have always wanted to go here but am wondering in May 1st is too early. shaggy

Could be snow, and unless you go the very end of May, Trail Ridge Road won't be open. Snow is something we can't count on happening, nor can we count on it not happening in May. :)

That's not a good answer, sorry about that, but you need to come with warm clothes that week. ;)

Will there be enough to see with the Trail Ridge Rd. closed? Called Rams Horn and they said they don't give summer weeks to RCI. . Will I miss something magnificent if I don't get to see that road? shaggy

Well, it's the road to get into Rocky Mountain National Park, but the entrance on the east side might not be as impassable as the west side, but I am not sure because we always go through from the west, then through Estes Park, then back down to the highway to home. Maybe someone else can be a little more helpful. :D

We have had snow in early June in Denver. In 2002, we had a huge storm over Memorial Day weekend, and Estes Park is in the mountains, at a higher altitude. But my brother-in-law always says that May is so nice where he lives in Sacramento, so seasonal, pretty and not to warm, but when we went, it was about 109 or something, so you never know about weather. Even the weather people don't know. ;)

Mid September

How is it the middle of September? We have a week there the Saturday after Labor Day this year.

Chances are, your weather will be much better, as our seasons in Colorado, especially higher in the hills, tend to be very true to the seasons on the calendar.

Trail Ridge road is kept open from Estes Park to "Many Parks Curve" all year round. That includes access to a very large portion of the park, including Bear Lake and Morraine Park areas. Here is a link to a very detailed PDF map of the park -- you can see Many Parks Curve and most of the roads to the east of it will be open in May. As you can see, the bulk of the roads, trails, etc. are not affected by Trail Ridge being closed.

The views are stunning, and I think it would definitely be worth your time to visit the park even if Trail Ridge is not open all the way through.

RCI does get summer weeks. We went on a weeks exchange 3 years ago and will go in aug 09 on a points vacation exchange.

We were there a few years ago in early June and the weather was a tad iffy. It flurried one day but no accumulation. It is a lovely resort in a beautiful location. We drove the whole way up the park and saw the biggest snow plows we've ever seen as well as the highest mounds of plowed snow, easily 30 to 40 feet......amazing. The plows were parked in an area "just in case" they were needed.
We got this exchange from RCI about a year out.
Enjoy whenever you decide to go.

I called the chamber of commerce in Estes Park and reached a nice lady by the name of Leslie. What da ya know? I'm Leslie too so I knew she would be upfront since we had laughed about having the same night.

She suggested I wait so I can do it all. The weather in May is too ify, they are expecting snow on Thurs May 1st. She said since I will probably only make it up here once to try and come in Sept as the colors are great, the crowds are gone and the weather is better. She just confirmed what I was thinking. So in case anyone wants it there is openings at Rams Horn on May 1st & 2nd. Shaggy

I agree with Leslie. RMNP without Trail Ridge open is not RMNP.

September should be cool and pleasant with the elk rutting & bugling. Don't get too close to a rutting and bugling elk, or a mom with a calf.

EP has a short summer peak season and Ram's Horn is a tough trade then.

We were always there the first or second week in June and it was always the first week Trail Ridge was open. We would drive over to the Western Entrance, to Grand Lake and Lake Granby.
