Is it typical for their to be so much rain forecast for Oct? I have been watching the weather for the last few months in anticipation of our trip. I know the hurricane was around a week or so ago but there are still a lot of showers predicted. Is it at all like Princeville where some clouds move in and rain a bit and then move out? Or rain at night? Or rain mostly on one side of the island? Sorry, I am a newbie to St John and am looking forward to a fun vacation with lots of time in the water.

When we stayed last year in November we experienced a couple brief showers during the day, but most of the rain came overnight. When we were there in 2011 in October I only remember one rainstorm during the day and we were on a boat dive at the time. Came up from the second dive to a squall. Motored out of it in a few minutes. IMO, I wouldn't worry too much about rain spoiling your vacation, but plan on lots of bug spray. Skeeters abound during the rainy season. Have fun.

I like accuweather.com's detailed daily forecasts show the Hours of Precipitation expected.

That's much more helpful than the Weather Channel (and others), which only show the chance of precipitation. For example, 80% chance of rain sometime during the day versus 2 hours of rain expected throughout the day.

If it says 40% chance of rain - that means if you stand in one spot - you have a 40% chance of getting rain upon during that 24-hr time period. Generally rain comes from directed cumulus clouds and not overall skies unless there is a tropical storm (or greater). If the wind all of a sudden picks up - expect rain. Much like Princeville in summer.
Don't sweat it - the roughness of the seas is more important as it affects beaches and ocean travel, and is a general indicator of regional weather.
