Questions about cruise to Nassau - visiting Atlantis

5 couples on our street are going on a 5 day cruise from Jacksonville next month. We have not been to Nassau since our honeymoon in 1966. We would like to see Atlantis. Is it necessary to take a shore excursion or can we make our own arrangements to get to Atlantis? We will be in Key West for a day and did own at Sunset Harbor there. We haven't been there in a few years and look forward to brousing on our own as we feel comfortable there. Any suggestions for Nassau will be appreciated. We are there from noon until 10 pm. Thanks.

We stopped in the Bahamas(Nassau) on a cruise a few years ago. We took a water taxi over to Atlantis. We did it on our own.

We got off the cruise ship and did a taxi van tour with other couples getting off at the same time and ended up staying at Atlantis instead of going back.

We did a cruise several years ago. During the day, we took a taxi to the beach right near Atlantis to spend the afternoon. Then after dinner, we took a taxi to Atlantis (directly) and spent the evening wondering around, visiting the casino and having a couple of drinks. It is really quite close to the cruise terminal.
