We will be visiting Cabo for the first time in Feb 2015- so need to figure out whether we need a car and for how many days. Of course, it is convenient to have a car, but rental prices are pretty expensive in Cabo based on my Tripadvisor research.

Does the Cabo GM have daily car rentals? If so, does anyone know how expensive it would be for a daily rental?

I believe the Mega is the closest grocery store. How much is the taxi fare?

It is easy to ride the bus into town from GM?

Any suggestions on budget to moderately priced restaurants within walking distance or in town?

Thank you for any help.

Joyce

I hit Cabo every January for BD and whale watching.

I would suggest you read stickies and do searches on questions as they have all been discussed at length here generally without consensus. Plus others like using CC, exchanging money, AI, sales pitches, safety, police, etc.

I always rent a car. It is about $400 including mandatory liability. CC and Trip insurance cover collision and comprehensive. Generally body snatcher at car rental will offer $300 voucher off rental and other activity if up to sales pitch which includes scrumptious breakfast.

I have to do trip insurance as Medicare is void but given all the bells and whistles highly recommend.

Have toured but not stayed at this resort. On my list as resorts there have 1/4 rule and I exchange through RCI.

Staying at Playa Grande last week of January 2015.

Cab fares can add up quick for trips to grocery store, whale watching, sunset cruises, checking out the arch, etc.

Driving is easy in Cabo. We always rent a car;

We normally stay at Cabo Azul which is next to GM...last there Xmas 2013.
Lots of new restaurants across street from Cabo Azul. So if you don't have a car, you have some new choices that weren't there a year ago.

My son and his girlfriend stayed at GM last week and loved it. They went into Cabo San Lucas several times and caught the bus in front of the Mega store. They said it wasn't too bad to walk to the store. The buses are quite nice--not school buses.

The GM offers a shuttle to Cabo at $16/person round trip. Sometimes they would take the shuttle one-way for $8 and then take the bus back for $2 if they wanted to stay later than the last shuttle, which I think they said returned at 9 p.m.

We did seldom rent a car in Mexico. We prefer to take the bus or a taxi - less hassle with parking. When we do have a car, we tend to park in the closest grocery store parking lot and walk from there.

There are several restaurants within walking distance of the GM. Downtown Cabo San Jose square is several blocks from the resort. There is a San Jose bus that runs continuously around town that is less than $1 - you can snag it in front of GM.

Mega is about 6 blocks in the other direction. We walk to Mega and take a taxi back for about $5 to return to the resort with our purchases. There are several banks with ATM's along the walk to Mega to get Pesos.

We took the bus from across the highway from the Mega to Cabo San Lucas for a few dollars. Taxi was in the $30-35 range. GM did not have a shuttle then, or we would have taken it.

Taxi from GM to Mega is $5, but an easy walk there, then taxi back with groceries.

In the direction of the Mega (easy walk), we ate at the Baja Blue a few times. Next to the Mega is a Starbucks with good wifi.

In the direction of San José del Cabo (a bit longer walk) we ate at Habenero's, Mi Tierra and El Herradero. We usually bused back to the GM.

The only restaurant at the GM was Peri Q which was okay.

We also went in February and it was always breezy and sunny. The GM has 2 large pools, one heated and the other cold! Lots of free beds around the pools. The beach has palapas, but no lounge chairs, which was strange and mostly not used.

All the suites at the GM face the ocean. We didn't have a car, but used Cielito Lindo for airport to GM, GM to Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach (CSL the second week), SB back to airport. The service was excellent.

Most people refer to "Cabo" meaning Cabo San Lucas.

I believe the Grand Mayan is closer to San Jose.

Mexicans refer to the area as Los Cabos. Roughly translated, The Points.

Keep in mind San Jose is a different town than San Lucas.

Wow, nice to know that all the GM units face the ocean - nice treat. It is a bummer, that there are no lounges under the palapas on the beach. Although I seldom go into the water, my fav thing to do is sit all day under that beach palapa and read. Is there any way to drag some beach lounges down there??

Thank everyone for all the comments and restaurant suggestions.

Ron, for your transportation - what is Cielito Lindo, CSL, and SB?? We are staying the first two weeks at Pueblo Bonito Rose - so need to get from there to the GM. Sounds like a cab would be about $35.

Honestly, no need to rent a car if the Mega is only a $5 cab each way. But since it is our first time, it may be nice to have a car for a few days to visit the major sites/beaches.

Is there a car rental at GM for a daily rental?

Thanks,

Joyce

Cielito Lindo is a car service which we took to the GM in SDC and then to CSL (Cabo San Lucas) where we stayed at Pueblo Bonito's SB (Sunset Beach).

There is a free shuttle to and from Sunset Beach to the Rose. You should try that a couple of times to see the Sunset Beach resort, one of my favorite timeshare swaps so far.

Your trip will be in the opposite direction as ours was in Feb, 2012.

We also prefer reading on lounges under palapas on the beach. I don't know about dragging some down. You could ask, sorry now that we didn't.

On a previous trip to Cabo San Lucas we did rent a car, but now I find it's easier and cheaper to bus, cab and use a car service like Cielito Linda. No doubt you should be able to rent a car by the day from the GM.
