My mother-in-law has a marriot timeshare in Palm Springs that she never uses. If she sells it...does she get to keep her marriot reward points...or do the points go with the sale of the TS. Thanks for any help.

The Marriott Reward Points she has already accrued are not known to the new buyer and shouldn't be part of the transaction, but everything is negotiable. Your M-I-L should not even mention them.

Stated differently, the Marriott Rewards points are in an account in your MIL's name. That ownership of that account and the points in it are unrelated to the ownership of the timeshare.

Your MIL can accrue points in that account from hotel stays, Marriott Visa card charges and other earning opportunities. Points obtained in connection with the ownership of a Marriott timeshare is just another way of adding points to that account.

Thus, after she sells the timeshare, she will still have those points to use.

I thought I read on TUG that you couldn't transfer reward points to someone else.

...except to a spouse in connection with requesting an award.

However, Spence accurately states that "everything is negotiable" in a buy-sell transaction. For example, "I'll offer to buy your week at your advertised price, but only if you'll throw in a week's stay at a category 7 Marriott resort, using some of your Marriott Rewards points for the award."
