Penneys' website has decent furniture for reasonable prices. I have been considering several sets for our spare room. I don't know about the quality, but I understand that Penney's stands by all of its products. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them. I just cannot make up my mind what to do.

We have a bed and old desk in our son's old room right now, which acts as our guest room and is used quite often lately. I have looked and looked for a set that I would like forever, and I just cannot find anything different from our own bedroom set, which is Queen Anne Cherry by Universal Furniture that we bought over 15 years ago, for our 20th wedding anniversary. Still love it!

Our daughter's old room is so cozy right now, not another piece of furniture would fit in there. I put my old cedar chest at the foot of the beautiful metal canopy bed. With the Victorian Magnolia print wallpaper (love it), the large window seat, and all the mauve paint, it is basically the room I always wanted for my daughter (but she didn't ever want that, of course).

The article was based on a book written by Leonard Bruce Lewin, a 42-year veteran of the furniture industry. The name of the book is "Shopping for Furniture: A Consumer's Guide." It was published in 2004.

The article was very good, and it gave a one paragraph summer of the author's conclusions for each brand. Unfortunately, the article isn't available on-line anymore. However, I checked and you can get the book on amazon for about $10. It would probably be a good investment.

Good luck!

John

A copy on it's way. So far what I like (Kincaid - Gathering House) is expensive even when getting a bargain in NC. I will however buy well made furniture that I can give to my kids vs. some Rooms To Go crap.

That was my thought, too, when I bought the expensive stuff. Turns out the kids grew up and didn't want it. They have their own tastes that differ from my more traditional ones. I had good intentions but forgot to factor in that my children had their own personalities.

If you want the best there is and want it handed down for generations I say Henkal Haris. It is defiantely top of the line quality, beautiful, but so very, very expensive!

Seeing that you are from Northern Kentucky, you are probably fairly close to Amish country. (Holmes County in Ohio) They build some very good furniture, and they have really changed over the years, they do alot more contemporary furniture than they used to in the past. Many of them get the Pottery Barn, catalog in the mail to keep up on current trends.

Many different woods, and many different finishes available also. As a bonus it is made in the US and made of REAL wood.

This is appealing to me. Do you know if they do mail order or have a web-site? Seems an odd question to ask since I don't think the Amish are wired into the internet but I thought I'd ask. I'm sure there are plenty of middlemen on the web but I am asking if one can access the makers directly through the web.

No online pricing, but you may want to peruse:

One of the companies I mentioned earlier, Canal Dover, is an Amish based company in Midvale, Ohio. I have one of their mission style dining sets. The quality is absolutely top notch. It wasn't cheap, but as they say, you get what you pay for.

I bought mine from Colonial Furniture. I actually bought from a place that had representative samples from a number of manufacturers. We were exceptionally pleased with the quality of the pieces. We thought it was better quality than Ethan Allen and considerably less expensive. Ours is cherry and the drawers of the dresser and high boy are oak, all solid wood. Here is their website: www.colonialfurniture.com/factory-store.htm

They are in PA and they have a showroom and a discount-sale area there.

I wanted to mention that our Thomasville, Sumter and Stanley sets have outlasted our Ethan Allen furniture. We spent lots of $$$ on 8 dining wooden chairs by EA that did not hold up well, (Table is doing fine) and they did not stand by them since the problems showed up outside about year 7, outside the warranty.

Also, recently in the past 5 years, bought an EA secretary and once it was delivered, realized the quality really was not worth the price. The veneers are really visible. I think the quality is going downhill at EA to make the prices more appealing to younger folks.

Just my 2 cents worth!
