A very large and organized group of local Puerto Vallata citizens have been activly protesting the accident where a drunk driver hit a pedestrian and wasnt prosecuted.

The stories I hear are the person that was hit, was or is, a local nurse. She was either severly injured or died, idk. The drunk driver is a local that for some reason, many say bribery, wasnt prosecuted resulting in outrage amoung a good many locals.

Why this might matter is traffic to and from the airport is at a standstill. In the hotel zone, the main road is blocked by police at the Soriana Plaza. Im not sure where the other end of the road closure is but it is disrupting airport traffic. The protests are on Friday and a local I know says Saturday also and posibly Sunday too.

People are leaving resorts to the airport before noon to avoid the traffic jams.

We had a long cab ride around the protest a short while ago going from the Mayan Palace to Buganvilias. There were signs being held up across 200. We were told the drunken driver was related to a politician (?). 200 was closed off in both directions near the marina.

PS a 130 peso ride became 300 pesos

Translation: $8 cab became $18.

We also had a cab ride detour today:
Our cab from Villa Varadero / Nuevo Nayarit Marina to Puerto de Luna PV / Hotel Zone crossed the Ameca River bridge on MX 200 and then turned toward the PV Convention Center . We came back to MX 200 by Plaza Carecol .
We paid 400 pesos - which is basically the fare

I use Uber for the most part. We will be dealing with the ride to the airport soon. My guess is the back road trip could take 45 minutes or more to get to the airport from the hotel zone.

I didnt realize how cheap transportation is here until this trip. When we went to get our rental car they pulled the full insurance required scam so we used Uber. The average cost of a ride is around $5.

This was our first trip without a car in Mexico.

We rented car for our first couple of trips to MX. After that, we decided to use taxis to get to and from the airport and rely mostly on buses to get around locally. Transportation is so inexpensive, and it eliminates all of the potential liability issues and other risks. If something ever came up where we wanted to drive ourselves, we would just rent a car for that day.

If the protest is still blocking MX 200 when you leave for the airport - this is the probable route based on our taxi ride yesterday from Nuevo

Avenida Los Tules to Avenida Mexico to Calle Passeo Villa de Las Flores [ past The PV Convention Center ] & into the airport
It is direct - just inland [ but could take a little longer if all traffic to the airport and Nayarit has to go that route. ]

The protest has ended is what we were told at check out. Its smooth sailing for us is what it looks like.

Even though the protests are over, getting to the airport at 2 pm on a Sunday is chaos. It took about 10 minutes to get the airport area but 20 minutes more to get to the departure area in an Uber. Once at the airport everything went pretty good. Kind of amusing is there was a pushy tourist claiming they needed to get on a flight. As they pushed by us and others, which we were all fine with because of the flight status claim, security decided to go through their luggage. Maybe 30 minutes later we saw this group looking for a place to sit in the terminal. They had plenty of time.
