Popular movie theater chain files Chapter 11 bankruptcy

LOL on the headline - 28 locations? This isn't a big chain. However, most of what they said really does hold true. My entire life we always considered if we needed to go to the theater - stuff used to come out on broadcast TV eventually "for free". Then there were rentals where for one price basically everyone got to see it, which could be 2-6 tickets in my family. Back then you used to really have to wait too - sometimes 3 years for broadcast, and probably a year for VHS. Now they're out for purchase on DVD in less than 8 months, sometimes just 3-4 months. They're on streaming at around the same time. With so many entertainment options - first run movies are way down the list for many people. There's also way way less pressure to have seen a movie - people are so used to the entertainment watched being fragmented they don't peer pressure you anymore in many many situations.

I think in general theaters are screwed - people can affordably get huge TVs, amazing sound systems, and can then pause to use the restroom, and kick out anyone who's unruly and affecting your home movie experience. With all the other entertainment options - I often don't even notice that a movie has come out till it's already streaming or on DVD. So why would you spend the money, time, and hassle to go to a theater? What's worse is this was one of the chains that tried to give you something else - food, luxury, IDK whatever. Of course, that isn't the real draw - people can eat rustic american at places where that's the focus or can get it at home in most cases. But what can theaters do? I don't think it's a business that works as a ancillary to some other business.

The cost for a family of four (4) to go a movie; plus to purchase , 4 popcorns and 4 sodas is over $100.00 dollars or more depending on the movie and the areas you live in.IMHO…

yes, theaters are being demolished and the land used for apartments and townhouses
(in Virginia)

If they are that popular, why are they going Chapter 11 due to lack of attendance?

No mention of the declining quality of the product either.

I love going to our local movie theater if there’s a good movie playing like Mission Impossible and being retired we do matinées. Especially if it’s raining and nothing else to do. The theater was full for Mission Impossible. All gray hairs! lol!

Sometimes when we are on vacation and it rains we’ll hit the movie theater if there’s something good playing. Unfortunately there rarely is.

We never buy food at the movie theater. I don’t get the obsession with having to eat watching a movie. Then again we don’t do that watching TV at home either. It’s a bad habit.

That said- yes it’s gotten expensive. Before the pandemic it cost us like $4 for a senior for a matinee where we used to live. Here in NH now we get no senior discount and it’s like $9!

The drive in down the road just opened up again. We thought they were going to close for good as the owner has been trying to sell it for years. We don’t do drive- ins anymore since getting older because we find it too uncomfortable sitting in our car, etc. Used to love drive ins as a kid, though!

We still go to the movie theatre 3 to 5 times per year, it just depends on what comes out that year. We went to Mission: Impossible recently, and already have tickets for Jurassic Park this weekend.

What Theater chain? I couldn’t open the site, blocked

We occasionally go to the Orion which is a local full service theater with drinks and food. The seats are large with tray tables.

I kind of miss the hot summer nights with a mattress in the back of a pick up truck at the drive in.

We had 2 chain theaters in our suburb, both with multiple screens, but they were never upgraded to the fancier seats, etc. One is now a big tile store and the other is WhirlyBall, an entertainment venue with small bumper car style vehicles, laser tag, etc. At least they aren’t just empty!
