I've been an owner for several years now. I've always exchanged my points and have never used them "in-house." It's about time I give it a go. A few questions.

I want to go to Bonnet Creek Christmas week 2012. I need 166k points for a 1 bedroom. I have 105k (2012 use year). I plan to pool 61k points from my 2013 use year to make the reservation work. Is that right so far?

What should I do with the remaining 44k points? Do I go ahead and pool them or can I wait until the end of the Dec 31, 2012 to do that? I'd rather wait, in case I can use them during the year.

Another unrelated question. If I deposit into II, my trading company, I am 4k points short of a deposit. Can I rent 4k points from Wyndham to get the full 109k points I need to deposit?

Thanks!

If it were me, I'd just pool them all at once. If you wait and do it later it will cost you another $39.

I agree with scootr5...pool them all, and they will be there to use on their own or to combine with futures years points. In fact I would pool my 2014 points now too.

This avoids the end of the year problem of having a few odd points at the end of a year that you cant use.....

Reservation credits on pooled points?

When you pool multiple year points, how do they compute your reservation credits for both of those future years?

I think reservation credits are granted on an annual -calendar year basis. Pooling points does not change how this works.

So, if you own two 154k contracts (308K total points) you will get 4 reservation credits on January first, of each year (to use during that calendar year).

(every-other-year contracts are converted to an annual number of points for this calculation. So, if you own a 154K odd-year contract, you will get one reservation credit per calendar year.)

Same with guest certificates, if you get one a year you still get one a year whether of not you pool points..ie the transaction credits and the reservations credits do not go into the pool, only the points

If you pool 2014 would that not shorten the life of those points....or does it not start the time on them until 2014? It sounds like good strategy as long as the time doesn't start on them until 2014.

It's three years from the date they are placed in the pool. If you think you're going to use them all by the end of 2014 it would not make a difference, but waiting until next year would extend their life if you were not sure you would use them all.

My use year starts Jan 1..I pooled my 2014 points in Jan 2012 and now those points are good until Jan 2015 (3 years)...I didnt extend the use of those points much beyond there normal expiration date (a few days) but I am able to use them for for reservations in 2012 and 2013. Ill pool my 2015 points in Jan 2013, and have them available for 2014 reservations

I am doing this for two reasons.1) so I dont have left over points at the end of a use year that are too small in number to use, and 2) Ive used up all my current years points.(and next years) and I still have places to go

Ron:

Almost sounds like you need more points :)

But your approach is definitely a good conservative one - i.e. maximize the points that you already have before buying more

No question I need more. and Im buying more but Im no conservative (thats a dirty word to me) ....I should be up to a million and a half points and 14 fixed and floating week by mid year....and by this time next year the hope is to double that.....

There is another thread here on TUG where someone is talking about the Golden Age of Timeshare....If you are going to buy, this is the time to do it...I agree

Wow! that's a lot of points. Congrats.

I 'm buying some more points (just to get ARP at resort that I like to visit) ... I'll have around 540K points - definitely more than enough for my family's trips. I may even give away a contract or two, if I find I don't need this much.

I would be right in line with Ron, if my wife would let me. There is an ebay auction right now that just got a bit to rich for my ability to convince her to bid. I do wonder if 2 million points is enough to live in timeshares year round. If this could be done for less than $10,000 mfs, it would be less than the sum of my mortgage and property tax. If our economy ever gets rolling again, we may not see deals that are available today.

If you are VIP Platium, I believe it is doable. Myrtle Beach in the winter months (Westwinds). Patriot's Place in the Summer, for the spring and fall a combination of Shawnee Villiage, Atlantic City, Old Town Alexandria, National Harbor, Myrtle Beach, and Patriots place. I suspect you can add Bonnett Creek and Smokey Mountain for most timeframes in the year. The math might even work if there is no other house or rent expenses.

Well, we are doing that now with many fewer points than that since we stretch the points and get bonus weeks from exchange companies
