Hi,
I went to a Marriott Vacation Club presentation to get a free night and a later checkout. I had no intention of signing up. I am a widow and I lost my son this year and this was my first vacation with my other two children without my son. Of course this came out in the begining getting to know me phase. I feel like he really played to me wanting to give my other two kids happy experiences. I signed up. Of course he made it sound like I would be able to use my points for cruises and Disney and basically go anywhere. Reading all the reviews now, I don't think it is really like that. I don't know if this is a good deal at all. So if anyone can way in, I would really appreciate it. My Vacation Ownership Interest is 51,700 star options. I have 103,400 this year. It converts into 80,652 Bonvoy Points and Marriott Vacation Club Point Election value is 1,509 Club Points. My annual assessment is 1,132.23 and my dues are 250. The sales person said I could use my certificates to pay the assessment, but I do not see where it says that anywhere. I have 5 (possibly 10 certificates a year). I do not see anything about a home location. It only says Flex Vacations Ownership Plan. Anyway this was 19,000. I am in my 10 day window, so I am wondering if I should cancel. I do not need any more stress in my life. Thank you

Yes, as you specifically went without intending to buy, it is very likely that it isn't a good deal for you. You have a limited amount of time to cancel and a much greater amount of time to look into things to see whether it is a good deal for you, they will take your money any time, so no problems if you want to go back to it another time, once you know what to negotiate for.

Cut yourself the slack of not having to spend 2 years working out to get value from the ownership and possibly finding out it wasn't what you need, and cancel.

Its excellent ownership when you don't overpay or finance it, you have overpaid for what you got., you could get what you have bought for at most half of what you paid and possibly for free.

They took advantage of you. I am disgusted by the idea that the salesperson took advantage of a widow by playing on her emotions (although it is common for timeshare salespeople to exploit emotions).

What you bought has zero resale value. It was not explained to you fully; you don't even know what you own (I don't know what you bought, but they don't sell StarOptions as a stand-alone product).

Rescind. Follow the included instructions to the letter. Too bad the salesperson will then loose his fat commission.

Easy enough to rescind. You've only have "X" amount of days to do this so be sure to do it first thing on Monday morning 2/24/25.

Follow the exact instructions for your rescission. Send it via USPS Certified Mail and retain the Postmarked Receipt. Send it via email as well.

Allow up to 45 days for a refund.

Follow instructions in the contract. They will say where to mail ect. DO not try to cancel by telling the salesman without also doing what The Time traveler states above. It must be done per the instructions in the agreement.

From what you're saying, it sounds like you are really confused and unsure about what you really purchased. The fact that you are uncertain is definite proof that you should rescind something that you're going to be paying $1133 per year for (and inevitably increasing each year).

Of course, what the sales person told you seems confusing to you (and to me). What most say here on TUG about TS sales people is that if their lips are moving, they're probably lying.

Welcome to TUG. I'm delighted that you found us in time to rescind.

It sounds as if you were sold a Vistana (Sheraton) Flex Vacation Ownership.
You have a very low number of points, and you paid quite a lot for it.
Here is a link to people who want to sell their Vistana Flex ownership. You can see that what you bought is very low cost to buy resale.

Whenever a timeshare owner wants to use timeshare points (e.g. StarOptions) for a Cruise, (or for anything other than reserving a timeshare), the timeshare company must "convert those points to cash". They give you a value lower than the maintenance fees you paid, they purchase the cruise, and you will end up owing a significant amount of cash in addition to the points you exchange.

Bonvoy points are Marriott's credit card loyalty program points. It is never a good value to convert your timeshare points currency to another program. You would only do this if you could not travel one year, and your points were about to expire.

While the timeshare salespeople paint images of using your points for "everything", the reality is, using your points for anything other than reserving a timeshare vacation is a poor value.

Rescind immediately.

If the contract allows cancellation by email do that immediately, and then follow up on Monday if still in the rescission window with regular (tracked) mail.

As others have already stated, I can't even figure out what exactly you bought although is seems you bought Sheraton flex. If that is what you bought, you can get the same thing for less than $100.
Look in the rescission section and follow the steps written there to cancel.
