Pissed At Amazon

I suspect there's something else going on here. Why would anyone hack into an amazon account only to make 2 purchases for $1.56? Credit cards are still encrypted info even once you're logged into your Amazon account, so unless you see any other nefarious purchases on the card I would guess that your card hasn't even been compromised.

Did you check what was purchased on Amazon, and where it was shipped to? Maybe you left your Amazon logged in on a shared computer?

I agree, Amazon's response was inadequate, but I suspect there's something else going on here and you're hitting the panic button without collecting enough info yourself.

Change the passwords on Amazon, email and any other 'linked' accounts associated with Amazon--all at the same time (or as near as possible). Insure that all the profile information in amazon (and other accounts) is correct and that your emails/password recovery information hasn't been changed/added. Just because this incident involved 'only' your Amazon account doesn't mean they don't have more info.

Change the passwords again within 24 hours.

Freeze/monitor your credit and set up prompts for any 'card not present' transactions on all credit card/debit accounts.

sptung hit the nail on the head: that charge was probably just a probe. If this was a 'professional' job, they might take a while to make the next hit (after they sell the information to someone who want's to make big $$$ with your stolen info). Next time, it might be your bank account or credit card or a new line of credit. Hard to say. monitor monitor monitor.

If you have trouble with passwords, Lastpass (and others) are a great tool to store, monitor and randomize/reset your password information.

Finally, I would send a nice email to the Amazon security department security@amazon.com explaining your concern and the lack of CS response.

The purchases in my Amazon account were not for $1.56; that's what the temporary charges were on my credit card. The purchases were for clothes and sneakers, with a total value around $400.

Never heard back from Amazon and I've been real busy at work and haven't had the time to close the account. Did delete the old (closed) credit card though.
