I suspect there's something else going on here. Why would anyone hack into an amazon account only to make 2 purchases for $1.56? Credit cards are still encrypted info even once you're logged into your Amazon account, so unless you see any other nefarious purchases on the card I would guess that your card hasn't even been compromised.
Did you check what was purchased on Amazon, and where it was shipped to? Maybe you left your Amazon logged in on a shared computer?
I agree, Amazon's response was inadequate, but I suspect there's something else going on here and you're hitting the panic button without collecting enough info yourself.
